Thought it was funny.

But what if the water kills them, like in Signs?

The Vatican is advocating genocide!

Or, perhaps, a cunning defense plan.

Just curious here... what did Brother Guy have to say about gay aliens? Still no, or is Christ willing to make an exception in the interests of interplanetary harmony?

I didn't see any reference to gays in that article, and I doubt that the curator of the Pope's meteorite collection speaks for the entire Catholic Church.

Still, it was funny. I bet the guy would be a hoot to talk with.

Are we really that concerned with the Catholic Church's internal decision as to how its own faith works?

If we ar, can we at least get it right? It's not wrong in the Catholic church to be gay, it's wrong to act on it.

No it is advocating salvation through martyrdom.

Technically, the central figures in the Catholic church are aliens.

Technically since he is omnipresent he can't be an alien any where/when.

Very wrong to act on it. You can see how serious the Church is every time they give a pat on the back and a pardon to a priest.

I just needed something controversial in Hellfire. Aliens by themselves would just be funny.

I haven't seen them giving any priests pats on the back or pardons. Trying to ignore the problem, yes. In any case, the failings of its clergy don't change the nature of Catholic doctrine. Let's not pretend they have the same viewpoint as Bery. Neither party would want any part of the other.

Catholic doctrine makes sex crimes far more likely. What do you think is going to happen when you tell men that not only can they never have sex, ever, but it's sinful for them to even think about it?

I don't know, but certianly not child rape. You've got your causation all screwed up.

It's also illegal to have sex with goats but I haven't seen a run on farms.

You haven't been to Montana have you?

The flaw with your analogy is that most farmers aren't celebate. The point Xeq is making is that you're putting people into a position where they are having to repress what is arguably the most primal and core driver of the human race. That's going to have some adverse affects, because it's a completely unnatural act.

No one tells them its sinful to even think about it. I just got done saying this; it's ok to be homosexual, but not to act on it in Catholicism. Thinking about it is temptation, and temptation =/= sin.

It doesn't make sex crimes "far more likely" anyhow. It creates a situation where certain people, namely clergy, may have an incentive to commit sex crimes. That reason would be that they aren't able to satisfy their sex drive any other way and can't control it.

How this makes "sex crimes far more likely" is beyond me, since Catholic clergy are a miniscule portion of the overall population, and there's plenty of other sex crimes out there. Catholic sex crimes get a lot more negative attention because for some people, its the devastation of knowing that deeply trusted people have committed a very serious violation of someone else, or because people like you want to use them as an excuse to ***** about the doctrine of a faith you don't belong to.

It's a completely unnatural act to fly into outer space, jump out of an airplane, fly in an airplane, rappel, waterski, and a host of other things. Yes, it does create a situation where the clergy in question might feel that he can no longer control his sex drive and needs an outlet for it. However, he can also go get a prostitute and not run significantly different overall risk of getting caught. That might in the long run have adverse effects for him, but it doesn't result in anyone being molested.

In any case, its not a matter of concern to non-Catholics other than those involved in enforcing the law since the chances of your kid getting bothered by a pedophile priest is practically nil. Yet amazingly, non-Catholics seem to spend an inordinate amount of time lambasting the Catholic church over pedophile priests when really I haven't seen any shortage of far more relevant sorts of child and teenager molestors such as coaches and teachers.

This is one of the most absurd arguments I've ever heard, and I've heard it twice now in fewer than 20 posts. Celebacy does not, I repeat, DOES NOT turn men into child rapists.

The reason the church has a problem with pedophilia is because pedophiles are drawn to situations, locations and vocations which allow them privacy with, and power and control over, children. This is why you see so many cases of child molestation in religious institutions and perpetrated by elementary teachers, middle and high school teachers. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that there was a higher concentration of child rapists among pediatricians than other types of doctors. People don't become sexual abusers after and because of becoming a Catholic priest, they become Catholic priests to hide from parents in order to prey on their young.

More likely that what, exactly?

The priesthood isn't a requirement. It's considered a calling, and the church understands completely that not all are called. There are precepts of celibacy for clergy, but it's from a recognition that priests are totally dedicated to the kingdom they serve, not a burden they are forced to carry.

To be clear, I don't believe that celebacy turns men into pedophiles. However I do believe that celebacy does cause a lot of stress that comes out in odd ways and wrongheaded thinking about most things sexual in nature.

That is the same thing. You are saying celebacy causes men to molest children, and you are wrong.

Show of hands...

Who here that hasn't gotten any for a freaking long time believes they are now suffering from "wrongheaded thinking about most things sexual in nature"? Who here turned to pedophilia or any other deviant sexual proclivity because of it?

Besides Coro, of course. ;)

It seems that folks are saying one's sexual orientation is determined by their environment. A lot of gays would disagree, methinks. Loudly.

It may cause a lot of stress, and it may result in some "wrongheaded thinking", but that wrongheaded thinking is not child molestation, nor is it the belief that homosexuality is sinful. That comes from the Bible, and while I disagree with the Catholic Church on their understanding of what the Bible really says about homosexuality, the fact is that I don't necessarily have the right answer either and they may, in fact, be right. The issue is not clear. The same applies to birth control.

What exactly is this "wrongheaded thinking", and why is it wrongheaded, and how do you know it's caused by celibacy?
