After a month and a half of getting up on all fours and flopping on his face, the boy has finally figured out that by placing one hand at a time in front of himself and coordinating these movements with the kicking of his legs, he may propel himself forward at a steady pace...

In other words, the boy is crawling. 5 1/2 months and he is now crawling. Can't wait to pick him up today and get home to practice some more.

Excellent. All you need now is a harness and a plow.

Coming soon to a household near you - pulling himself up on things, and reaching stuff! Now you get to decide whether to babyproof the house or houseproof the baby :P

From personal experience: Baby-proofing the house just makes them better at overcoming obstacles later. I suppose this is a good thing, overall, but...

Ok I don't know why but every since you posted this, Foamy, when I see the thread title I start singing "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen and I have not been able to get it out of my head!

And now, I have the pub scene from Shaun of the Dead where they're dancing around a zombie while beating him with pool cues as that song plays on the jukebox.

You will quickly miss the days of setting him down in the middle of the room and being able to do a few things around the house and expect him to still be there when you get back.

Now comes the battle between how clean you think your floor really is and all toddler's unnatural ability to find any and all mouth-sized objects that no one else could ever find.

This makes it sound like it's the parents' fault for not cleaning enough. Studies have shown that babies and toddlers have abilities to spot patterns greater than adults. This allows them to determine that a speck of something an adult can't even see might be edible.

The statement was meant to be more humorous than anything else. IE: A baby can and will find things even in the cleanest of houses.

I didn't mean it as a snark or anything, Numbuk, apologies.

Yup. Friends of ours are currently discovering this very truth.

Foamy: if you haven't already begun, start teaching the little one some basic sign language ASAP. You'd be amazed how much reduction in squalling can be achieved by early establishment of genuine, if rudimentary at first, communication.

This....

Thinking about finding my 18 month old great-niece on top of the book shelf, playing with knick knacks.

To clarify, she was higher than my head. I had to get on a stool to get her down, and she immediately started to climb back up. The five adults who ran in at my distressed squawking initially were going to send me to a rubber room, until she made it half way back up again in front of them.
