Tired of using a disc for sub-par streaming (compared to the xbox 360?) Your day is here!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/14/netflix-on-ps3-goes-disc-free-gets-1080i-streaming-and-5-1-surr/

Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Netflix is partnering with Dolby on the audio side, and the surround format will be Dolby Digital Plus, which is the same codec used by the VUDU HDX streaming service -- we're guessing it'll require a tiny bit more bandwidth but the results should sound pretty great. Netflix says 5.1 will come to other platforms "over time," so we'll see how long that takes -- and given that the PS3 is now disc-free and the company's eschewed the SRS surround features baked into its Silverlight-based platform, we're guessing Microsoft's exclusivity period has now completely run its course.

Nah. It's 1920x540.

That reminds me, I was going to run a poll after I saw this.

I was getting crappier quality than what the XBox gives me.

I'm starting to get frustrated with the service though. The video quality keeps changing from better to worse to better again, sometimes as much as a dozen times in a 40-minute show. I wish there was a way to force it to remain at the lower setting once it downgrades. The temporary loss of audio has been quite inconvenient.

Could it be your internet connection? I had that kind of issue when I was using the Xbox with the wireless hookup(my network port is busted). When I got the disk for the PS3, I went with a direct connection. It's been like night and day. Hardly ever any stopping when watching something for it to change resolution or whatnot.

It could be. But I have a 2-story house with the router upstairs and the Xbox downstairs. Wired is not an option for me, unfortunately.

I have my XBox in the bedroom, my PS3 downstairs and across the house, but I have never experienced the issue of which you speak.

Now sitting at work with my laptop on wireless.... there I have experienced the speed drop and loss of sound.

What's the wall situation like? Drywall, balloon construction could make wired a fairly simple home project.

When you're talking about lag on the PS3, you also have to keep in mind that it's the only system that Netflix streams 1080p/5.1 to. That takes a lot more bandwidth than 720p/2.1.

I don't really have the time or inclination for something like that these days so I just live with it.

I just have cat6 cables running in my house outside the wall lol

and that's defiantly a connection issue Screeling. I used to get that when I was running it on wireless. Went wired and never had to deal with it again

Well, if you don't want to do the work (or the work-around, as Crim pointed out) for wired, then the next thing to try is changing the channel of your wireless network.

Powerline network is also an option.

Screeling...

another workaround, get a second router. Then take the second router and load the DDRT software and turn your router into a cheap wireless repeater to boost the signal to your weak signal areas.

My guess is that it's more an issue of interference than weak signal. Hence the suggestion to try a different channel.

The Wii also went to "no disc" Netflix on Monday.
