That's impressive. 13/13 here, but Canadians have it easy for geography, it's easy for us to memorize 10 provinces and 3 territorie, though there were only 2 territories when I went to school. Nunavut was created not that long ago.

It is an interesting place, historically, though. Nunavut is an Inuktitut word, and is basically the only remaining native american population that was never kicked off their land. The measly population of about 30,000 people in the entire massive territory is over 80% Inuit.

Now, the state capitals are another matter. We don't learn those in school in Canada (seeing as they aren't our states)... and state capitals are almost always little backwater villages you'd never hear of. For every Denver, Boston, Nashville or Indianapolis, there's a couple like Lansing (and I knew that one!), Springfield, Olympia, or Frankfort.



There was a big movement in the 18th and 19th century to make state capitals something other than the largest city in the state, for fear of concentration of power. That's why Albany is the capital of New York State, when by most measures it should have been New York City. It was a rebellion against cities like London and Paris, which hogged all the political power.

Didn't know there were quizzes involved in this thread, lemme go take one.

Edit: Well, I got 147 out of 197 countries of the world. I suspect I know all of them when I'd see the names, and I got stumped a little bit on spellings. It was nice of them to correct East Timor to Timor-Leste for me, but I couldn't get the right format for something like Democratic Republic of Congo. Caribbean island-nations stump me, too. Thank goodness my daughter is taking World History and Geography; I've learned a lot of West African countries in the past couple of months. Not bad, all in all.

When I was learning state capitals in the fourth grade, I didn't believe Boston was the capital of Massachussets, because every other state capital was some tiny little bullshit podunk city nobody gave a rat's *** about. There was a pattern to the state capitals. A definite trend. I've been right all this goddamn time!

Right, because by the late 19th century, the tendency was to once again go with the largest, most important city. Not quite sure how Indianapolis got in there, however. But when we visited Tucson last year, it was pretty funny - there are apparently a not-insignificant number of people there who believe that Tucson should really be the capital, and not Phoenix.

Edit: Interesting. Only 17 states have their largest city as capital. Indianapolis is the third-largest state capital city, behind Phoenix and Austin.

It gives you 15. But yeah, there's not a lot of time to stop and think. Geography's just a hobby. I "know" all of the capitals, too, but if tested would forget a bunch (Africa) and would misspell a bunch I'm sure.
