That's not what Rynar is advocating, he's advocating firing him. If you take a look at what he wrote, you'd see three actions/reactions in his statement; those actions begin with firing the Chief.

He should definitely be fired. No one else, however, should be, for supporting him. They have no power to make the decision, therefore the opinion is their own and perfectly within their rights to express. As for "moving to oppose the firing by force", in the ridiculously unlikely event that would happen, any of them using deadly force to resist the law can, of course, be killed in the process of trying to arrest them. If they were not killed in the process of arresting them, they should be tried and sentenced appropriately to whatever crimes they committed. Any citizen attempting to execute them summarily, or not in accordance with established law and procedure for trial should be arrested and tried as well, and can be shot in the proess of stopping them if they are employing deadly force.

However, the fact that you felt it necessary to even bring up "opposing the firing by force" indicates that you have a highly unrealistic appraisal of the situation.

There was a time, not that long ago, that I felt it was highly unreasonable, and beyond that unfathomably unlikely, that a police chief would basically state that police wouldn't... well... police if any of them got laid off essentially attempting to extort the tax payers. Given his willingness to openly commit one crime, I can certainly see how commiting a second would a logical course of action.

He's not extorting the taxpayers. He is, however, derelict in his duty if he's going to leave major offenses like burglary unattended to, and that's why he should be fired.

Furthermore, even if what he was doing was actually extortion, that does not translate to willingness to engage in armed rebellion. Lots of people are willing to drive drunk; that does not make them willing to rob a bank. Furthermore, disregarding the severity of the crime, he can't possibly think that the Oakland PD can actually pull off an armed rebellion even with 100% support from his officers (which is also so remotely unlikely as to be absurd).

I'm going to try and dig up a few stories that were representative of the norm concerning police officers and their union from two years ago when Massachusetts attempted to end police roadwork details.
