Anyone else see The Eagle? Just came out last weekend, and the box office suggests that it wasn't unusual that I had my own private screening in the theater last night (literally - I was the only one there. It was great).

Anyway, I rather enjoyed it. Wrestled with whether or not to go; I had seen a trailer, and parts of it looked just kind of cheesy. I also knew next to nothing about any of the stars (Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell), other than Donald Sutherland.

Even though the two aren't related, this is almost a sequel to Centurion, which came out last year. Deals with the same disappearing Roman legion, except that this one is set 20 years later and deals with the aftermath (and is based on a 1954 novel for young adults, "The Eagle of the Ninth").

I won't write a review, other than to say that almost all of the professional reviews I read get some fundamental part of the story wrong. Don't go see it based on those reviews, but if you like some good sword and sandals action, it's worth the price of admission. I thought it broke down a bit in the last half-hour or so, but it was still pretty enjoyable.

That looks...interesting. Hadn't heard of it before.

Divinity & I saw this Monday night.

We both saw the articles giving it fairly harsh reviews, but we went anyway. We both enjoy Rome period movies with a bit of sword play action.

We walked away from the theater having enjoyed it a great deal. It certainly won't win best picture or anything but it was worth the watch.

I'll also agree with Aethien that several reviews seem to have gotten the movie wrong in how the story actually plays out.

Thanks, Uinan, glad I'm not the only one who noticed that about the reviews. Glad you enjoyed it, too.

Wonder if Channing Tatum could be up for any superhero roles ... He certainly has the look. If there are any of those roles left, that is.
