How exactly is this supposed to work?

I bought my Hornet and can lose it if I don't have it insured? How do I get insurance for it? It'd be kinda shitty if I spent what I spent on it and can lose it permanently.

I see it comes with 6 months of insurance. How do I upgrade that to forever?

As far as I know (kaffis may have more information with his super secret subscriber stuff), they haven't gone into too much depth with the insurance yet. Effectively, there are 2 levels, the base hull of the ship, and any upgrades you add on. For early backers, they were providing Lifetime Insurance for the hull only, no upgrades covered besides the base loadout. So even early pledgers are going to have to buy upgrade insurance (or do without). They've stated many, many times that LTI will not be a huge, game-changing thing, just one little piece of upkeep that early pledgers don't have to do. I'm guessing none of us will want to do without insurance, as if you end up in a bad situation and lose the ship, you get nothing. While I don't believe you'll have the ability to upgrade it to forever, I'm betting you'll be able to buy it quite a while in advance and keep it insured with in-game currency.

I don't think at this point you can upgrade it to forever. You can continue the policy in game with in-game money though you and everyone else with insurance has to wait for production to become available.

Aww, crap. Had you asked this two weeks ago, any of a number of us could've helped you to do so. As of November 26th, though, no new ships with LTI are available, so we can't convert for you anymore.

The good news is this: shortly after the crowdfunding campaign ended, it quickly became apparent that offering LTI was a bad idea, so they went and backtracked on the significance of base "hull insurance" that LTI replaces. In short, instead of insurance on your ship being a primary moneysink, they broke it down into multiple pieces, of which LTI only covered the base hull, or the stock ship, so that the standard insurance for the base hull could be made a trivial upkeep cost that won't be a problem for anybody to cover.

Instead, the cash sink burden has been shifted to insuring the upgrades, modifications, and cargo you add to your ship.

So, barring any unknown future promotions, it can't be done (but if one comes up, I'll try to remember to make a point to tell you and help out), but it is officially not supposed to be a "big deal" as CIG has done everything they could to trivialize the LTI vs. standard insurance thing except actually take LTI away from the people who have it.

I don't ever want to be in a position in game where I get ganked or whatever and can't fly my ship because of insurance issues or whatever. I paid for the damn thing, It shouldn't ever be taken away from me.

Yeah, I'm expecting the base hull insurance to be super cheap, for the reasons Kaffis mentioned. I doubt any of us will ever be in that position, unless we're just playing really, really wrecklessly.

I doubt it will ever be a serious issue, at least as far as the base hull is concerned. Insurance on the basic hulls will most likely be trivial. It's blingy upgrades that might not be.

fair enough. I just get worried about stuff like that. Especially in a PVP game. Extra-Especially with toolbags like Goonswarm around.

Yeah, LTI was kind of something they tossed in on a whim for the reasons you mentioned, before they considered extending crowdfunding beyond the initial period. Then, since they had pitched it as an exclusive perk, they couldn't keep offering it indiscriminately, but had to still consider that they didn't want to be offering you ships you were likely to lose for big wads of cash. So they decided to just say "screw it" and make the insurance in-game on ships artificially low, and shift the insurance costs to non-"bought" things that weren't pledge rewards, like upgraded equipment and cargo that aren't part of the stock ship.

Even in EVE, you never really get to a point where you just can't recover. Theoretically it could happen that you can't upgrade your clone and are getting repeatedly podded and eventually lose almost all your skill points, but it's never ever actually happened to anyone as far as I know. If you dock at a station you own no other ships at they give you a free newbie ship, so no matter what you can go out and mine or shoot easy NPCs and build up your money again. Even having to do that is unlikely. I did make a series of major errors once and lost a ton of money and all my heavy ships and had nothing larger than a destroyer left, but I was back in a well-fit cruiser inside a week.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you're not in this alone. If you (or me, or anyone else) really gets into the crapper, you can always ask for some help, even if its just to pay your insurance bill so you can go earn money. That's just the informal side; lots of EVE corps and alliances have ship reimbursement programs where you can get your ship replaced if you lose it in combat (within reason; idiotic losses, overly-blinged losses, and such often aren't covered), especially if you lose it doing corporate activities. It isn't so much charity as it is making sure that everyone can contribute.

My corp just straight up gave me a pvp battleship at one point because they needed battleship pilots (which I am) but had none at the time (on account of aforementioned bonehead moves). Thankfully, that ship was never lost and I just returned it to the corp hanger eventually. It wasn't charity; it was about getting firepower out on the field.

Also, keep in mind that the hull itself isn't the bulk cost of most ships. On almost any ship, the guns, other mods, insurance, and drones cost at least as much as the hull. On expensive hulls like faction and Tech II/III hulls, people usually start putting rare and powerful modules as well. You can take a 1-billion ISK battleship hull and get it up over 5 billion total value with the fittings, easy. I've seen 73 billion BBs. The ship still works just fine with standard items, it's just that people have money to burn and the expensive stuff just makes them all the more effective - and worth shooting at. As logn as you don't go crazy fitting your ship out with over expensive upgrades and leave yourself no liquid cash, you ought to be fine.

In that case, I'll repeat my advice.. get a wingman!

It's not unlike going out to pick up chicks that way.

If you were to somehow find yourself without money to renew your insurance, all you'd have do is run a couple missions as a crewman on someone else's boat until you could pay the bill.
