Now that I have a PS3 and the 360... (I am not including the Wii in this list on purpose)

I am glad to have access to any gorram exclusive title I damned well please. I am also findind that I like the PS3 a lot more than I expected to. I have found a few things to compare.

Now for my game comparison I am going to use Oblivion: GotY edition.

Load Speeds:
PS3: Loading is slow as **** for this game.
XBox: Loading is fairly quick

Video:
PS3: Awesome look to the game (biased for my living room TV)
XBox: Looks good, I think if I had the 360 elite it would be better via HDMI.

Running:
PS3: No slowdowns or lockups
XBox: Had crashes which were not frequent, but would hard lock the Xbox until I restarted the console.

Gameplay:
PS3: Sneak damage not being figured correctly: Initial Prison escape sequence: I can be sneaking, unseen and even though I am getting the bow's sneak attack modifier the goblins are not falling over dead.
XBox: Initial Prison escape sequence: I am sneaking, unseen and getting the bow's sneak attack modifier the goblins are falling over dead.
PC: Initial Prison escape sequence: I am sneaking, unseen and getting the bow's sneak attack modifier the goblins are falling over dead.

Video Playback:
Serenity HDDVD and Serenity BluRay:
PS3: Amazing quality
XBox: Good Quality, again biased towards my LCD in the living room and not the 5 year old TV in my bedroom.

Overall: I love both systems, but holy crap; blu ray looks awesome.

Note: All 360's (for the last two years) have HDMI now, even the Arcade version.

Though you mentioned it, I think maybe the video sections of your review should be disregarded as you're basing them on both different connections, and different television sets.

I have both my PS3 and 360 hooked up via HDMI to my brand new Magnavox 42" 1080p LCD. I don't own any titles on both systems, though, unfortunately so I can't do direct comparisons.

Early-era current gen (multi-platform) games will generally show more of a discrepancy. Now it's much more even, with the occasional game quality leaning more toward one system or the other.

BluRay when coupled with a 1080p TV can display some amazing things. I don't think it's mandatory for games to support 1080p, but I think as these resolutions make their way into more households, we'll see them become more common.

But anyway, yeah the gap is definitely closing between the PS3 and 360 on multiple fronts (sales, multi-platform title quality, online experience).

Xbox Live is an excellent service that still has a lot of people hooked, but PSN has really come into its own lately, offering a fairly comparable experience.

Quality exclusives were rare in the PS3 early days, but now they are hitting pretty rapid-fire, with some 2-4 million sellers under Sony's belts.

And don't get me started on the incredibly dumb things Sony did around PS3 launch -- $600 launch price point, and not the mention the whole "people will get second jobs to buy our system" come to immediate mind.

Now, they've practically done an about-face. The re-branding with the slim launch and new price-point were much needed and a breath of fresh air. They appear to be working WITH the consumer as opposed to against them.

All in all, I think all three current gen consoles are in a very good place. The Wii is obvious; the 360 is holding steady in 2nd; and the PS3 is undergoing a bit of a much-needed Renaissance. So many people belly-ache about who's in what place, but I'll argue that it really doesn't matter. As long as all three consoles continue to perform well, developers will continue to support them and give us the games that we love.

Seems pretty win-win to me . . .

This is a really good site for showing which games run better on which systems.

I am pretty much discounting this section, especially since I have an obvious bias towards my happy 1080p LCD as opposed to my 30" samsung flat screen HDTV. My bias is especially strong since I am damn well tempted to leave the f-ing samsung behind when I move... that f-ker is just too heavy to move.

My 360 is ancient and has no HDMI port; but I may just need to get a new one and transfer my data over to a larger hard drive....

I would say the people in first place are the ones who got all of the systems. :)

Or.. those who did not get the frikking HD DVD drive for the 360.

I have to say it cracks me up a little that you're using a game from 2006 to compare the systems at this point.

I think so far, it's been proven that the 360 was definitely faster to ramp up development for (which was pretty easy to explain, it was based on the directX/windows platform, which was much more mature than PS3's unique architecture). I would expect that as the years move forward, we will see more impressive games on the PS3, just as we did late in the PS2's life cycle. For some reason, Sony prefers unique hardware which simply makes development more difficult.

As pure power goes, I believe the PS3 is more powerful, as well as having a blu-ray drive. I do not believe we're to the point where we're really seeing a difference yet, and many dev's are still programming on the 360 natively (just look at the port of bayonetta and the PS3 complaints from that).

MS is still refusing to release a blu-ray 360 (most likely because they do not want to pay sony the licensing fee), and i believe this will shoot them in the foot in the short term, but as streaming continues to mature, it is likely that by the time the next xbox comes out it will be a non-issue (although if they continue their idiotic anti-piracy disc based format, they will have to move to SOMETHING new, which appears to be blu-ray.)

However, I still hear that live is kicking the living tar out of PS3 online (and it must be if people are still paying for it), so that's MS's golden goose for the time being.

bah.. I meant to post this... I blame being tired from too much Mass Effect 2 for my posting error:

The only other game I have for my PS3 is the God of War Collection; which is just awesome, when I am not getting frustrated.

I plan to get more games (duh) but for now... I have Oblivion on the PS3 and am borrowing it on the 360 from a friend.

I plan to get GoW3, Dante's Inferno, Bioshock 2... all of these will be PS3 titles for me.

Since I'm able to download games for the 360, I was hoping to do a comparison. Then I realized that I don't own any cross-platform games on the PS3, because Xbox Live! always wins.

Shame.

I'm fairly certain that PSN will never be able to hold a candle to Live! at this point.

Two big pluses the 360 had going in were:

1) It had a year's head-start on the PS3.

2) MS already laid the foundation for their Live service with the original Xbox.

PS3 went in not only with a year's hand tied behind its back, but also having to build its online service from the ground up.

I think that the 360 will always have the advantage as far as online goes, but the PS3 is definitely closing the gaps that were opened up early on.

I think in the end we will see either a dead-even tie between PS3 and 360 for second, or possibly the PS3 slightly edging out the 360 (but only VERY slightly if at all).

Functionally as far as actually just gaming with other people, it's been some time since I've been able to tell the difference.

Are you talking about sales there? In North America, I think the 360 has it locked down. Worldwide though, the PS3 is HUGELY catching up. If last year is any indication, the gap might be closed in 2011.

As far as games though, PS3 had a mildly better year as far as exclusives go but this year is gonna be really competitive. (Some big hitters on both sides).

Kinda the issue with my 360. No HDMI port prevents it from being hooked up to my projector right now, and have been waiting for awhile to find something compelling enough to go through hassle of replacing it.

and as of tonight... I now have replaced my XBox 360 with a 360 Elite. So not only do I get to upgrade to an HDMI connection; but I also get to upgrade from the pathetic 10Gb HDD to a 120Gb HDD

Talking overall sales. I will disagree on the NA lockdown (unless you are talking about just the present, in which case I will agree). Long term, tho, I stand by my prediction that it will at least break even with the 360.

That said, the PS3 is in a very precarious place right now, and Sony knows that. They cannot afford any stupid decisions/mistakes that they have made in the past if they want to stay strong. I'd say gap closed by 2011 is realistic, as long as either company does not do something incredibly stupid. Hopefully by next gen (which some say happens in 2012), Sony comes out swinging instead of sinking. One big thing on the PS3's side, is that it still has some room for growth from a programming perspective, as there are many developers out there that have yet to push its boundaries (sadly, I think we will not see this until the end of the current gen). Meanwhile, the 360 seems to have reached its zenith. Just how long the PS3 can keep improving, remains to be seen.

Yeah, Sony still needs that one huge breakout hit (a la Halo). God of War 3 and GT5 are gonna be big -- but just how big, again, remains to be seen. Exclusives are one of the two big reasons that make me prefer Sony over its competitors. Nothing on the Wii or 360 (with Mass Effect being the closest) has been able to match the experience I have had with PS3 exclusives.

I get some AMAZING slowdowns on my PS3 with darksiders, but other than that I'm reasonably happy with it (considering I only bought it as a bluray player). I still prefer the 360 for anything cross platform, and Live kicks the hell out of the playstation network.

I got some, but not a significant amount. The 360 version has its share of tech issues as well (most notably the screen tearing). I think glitches and lack of polish was something that many reviewers chopped points of for both systems.

I would suggest checking into the PS3 exclusives if you buy 360 for cross-platforms. There are many gems to be found (Killzone 2, Uncharted 1 + 2, Resistance 1 + 2, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc).

Quote:

I personally wouldn't go quite that far. Live is definitely ahead of PSN right now, but I'd say they both offer relatively similar experiences. Install base is one thing that gives Live an advantage, as well as polish. As I said in a previous post, PSN was basically built from the ground up when the PS3 hit, while Live had time to mature. If you've checked out the PSN Store lately, you'll see there is TONS of content in both game and movie-related areas. Of course, if you are an online console player is comes down to: where are your friends? If the answer is Live, then that's probably where you want to be (same with PSN).

DS, do you find the fan noise on the elite is any less than the old one? I still have an original 360 that has survived RROD, although my HD DVD player didn't, but the fan noise is so loud it's annoying.
