Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we've just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I'd like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we're creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today's announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn't mean that we're walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we'll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we're going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

Thanks,

Darrell Gallagher

Crystal Dynamics Head of Studios

I actually really enjoyed the Tomb Raider reboot. Let's hope this is a time limited exclusivity deal, or maybe coming to Xbox/PC initially (for us PC players)...

The Sony fanboy crowd were always too busy smugly claiming that Nathan Drake was more awesome than Lara Croft anyways, so I'm not sure they'll care.

I honestly kind of like the symmetry this creates. Exclusive adventure platformers pitted against each other to win system sales. Uncharted certainly has always benefited from its need to only please one hardware spec, so it'll be pretty interesting to see Tomb Raider and Uncharted show off the best each system has to offer without worrying about multi-platform compatibility.

I'd probably be a little more excited about this if Microsoft hadn't caved on the Kinect 2 bundling, because exclusivity with a guaranteed Kinect could have opened some interesting design space -- I get the feeling that you could do some very fun things with intermittent Kinect-oriented sequences replacing, say, quicktime events, which are surely universally loathed as gameplay mechanics but loved as cinematic tools.

Anytime a third-party house goes console exclusive, it smacks of desperation on the part of the buyer, to me.

Ah well. I didn't care enough about the reboot to finish it, much less buy an Xbox One solely for its successor.

Yep, I felt the same way. I'm betting Microsoft wrote a check so big it broke the table. This is the beginning of the "Save the Xbox One" salvo.

Woof, yeah. Sony just announced 10 million PS4s sold (not shipped, but sold), while the Xbox One's third-party devs aren't wanting to sink money into development until there's a "higher installed base across next-gen".

According to its latest sales figures, Sony’s consoles outsold Microsoft’s consoles three-to-one in the quarter ending June 30. During its quarterly earnings call yesterday, Sony said that it had sold a combined total of 3.5 million units of the PS4 and PS3, compared to Microsoft’s quarterly figure of just 1.1 million Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles. Neither Sony or Microsoft opted to break down these numbers into per-console sales figures, but using previous announcements as a baseline it’s probably around 70-30 in favor of the PS4 and Xbox One. In short, this means Sony sold around 2.5 million PS4s last quarter, compared to about 800,000 Xbox Ones. This equates to some very unfavorable total global sales figures for the Xbox One, which we’ll discuss below.

3-to-1... ouch.

To be fair, CryTek has the option of putting Ryse 2 on PS4, as well, so that suggests they're not happy enough with the PS4 sales to do a next-gen only game yet, either.

All that's saying is that there are a staggering number of PS3s and 360s out there, and they're not ready to abandon that market for high profile next gen exclusives when the number of folks who've upgraded are still very much in the minority.

Which isn't that uncommon for 3rd parties. How long into the PS3 cycle were PS2 versions of games still being put out? Even with a veritable arsenal of high-powered first party franchises, it took Sony forever to kill off the PS2 and drive upgrades.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has never had the kind of cross-genre first party armory at its disposal that Sony has cultivated over the last 15 years. It's always relied on negotiating exclusives with 3rd parties (and renting Bungee.. Bungie? Whatever.). And with Epic deciding it's done with producing AAA titles and going off to build a playset of blocks to sell on its UT project, and losing access to Bungie, yeah, it's scrambling to make up ground as it's running into the problem Sony first discovered it had with the PS2/PS3 transition... Not enough people actually had the X-Box to stall adoption of the 360, is my guess.

Not to really debate against the overall point (that current gen systems have a small install base compared to last gen), but CryTek is probably not the best example here, given it's reported troubles (from being unable to pay it's employees on time, to large numbers of them leaving).

That said, Tomb Raider's exclusivity is timed.

Microsoft's biggest problem right now is DirectX, and they aren't going to be able to deliver an OGL/OCL competitive API any time in the near future. Microsoft lost the API war and Sony is merely an extremely fortunate beneficiary. Apple and Google won this war for Sony.

Yep, duration confirmed by MS. I'm betting a 3-6 month window. Especially since it's releasing at Christmas.

The only place to really play Tomb Raider games is now -- and has always been -- on PC.
