Reportedly, Brian Wilson has shaved his beard in reaction to the Giants losing their opening game. In other news a bunch of drunk Dodgers fans attacked a bunch of drunk Giants fans and one of the Giants fans is in the hospital in serious condition. Dudes, it is just the first game of a long season, chill out.

You should live in LA and get to hear the reactions. Next thing you know, the Dodger Stadium parking lot will resemble a police state. Not that they shouldn't react somehow, but I have long since stopped taking my kids, or even going without them, to Dodgers-Giants games. They bring out the worst (and worst element) in Dodgers fans. I went with a Giants fan friend of mine about 15 years ago, and seriously felt physically threatened. I sold my Giants game tickets last year, just don't want to deal with it.

I actually hadn't heard any mention of drunkeness, Micheal, although I'm sure it was involved. It's not like Giants fans back down when confronted with the idiots, either. There seems to be a chip on the shoulder that they bring with them, and that will only be worse this year, now that they won the World Series. Not that that at all excuses cold-cocking a guy from behind and putting him in serious condition, or any fighting at all. There's also layers of other causality - NorCal vs. SoCal, ethnic relations, perhaps, and the ever-popular bashing of gays. Because all Giants fans are fags, right? /rolleyes

But someone really does have to stand up and say something, and the Dodgers ownership certainly isn't doing it.

You haven't experienced true fear until you've visited Yankee Stadium as a Sox fan. I've seen beer dumped out on children, elderly couples accosted, women sexually assaulted... and it's totally common-place. No joke. Those "people" are animals. If the planes had flown into The Stadium on 9/11, the world would be a better place today. If the Yankees team plane had been the missile, I'd have joined Al Qaeda.

Hah, yeah, I can imagine.

I was thinking this morning about another factor that comes into play at Dodger Stadium, and probably Yankee Stadium, too - there's always the potential for a critical mass of Giants fans, given the amount of mixing and moving that goes on between SF and LA. San Diego? They're closer, but I can pretty much name all the Padres fans I know on one hand. Fans of other teams - Cards, Phillies, Cubs, etc. - just don't have the numbers to really make the people with no sense of self-esteem or identity feel threatened. I think the most fans I saw from the other team last year was at the Yankees-Dodgers game I went to - and I was surprised, people treated them pretty nicely, all in all. (And I was with a Yankee fan, too.)

I am a Montréal Canadiens fan, which in the NHL is a bit like being a Yankees fan in MLB -- the Canadiens have such a long and storied history that one could make a compelling argument that they are the NHL and the other teams just exist to give them something to do, so you can find Canadiens fans in every hockey town in North America (and Europe.) I almost feel bad for a few other teams in Montréal's division. When playing the Ottawa Senators, for example (a two hour drive from Montréal), there are usually more Canadiens fans in attendance than Senators fans. In Toronto, it's less obvious, because it's very hard to get tickets to Leafs games, but there are always a sizable number of Canadiens sweaters in the crowd when they play. Boston and Buffalo too... it's nice to always have a little support in any arena you play in. Still, nobody would argue it's unsafe to cheer for a different team in an NHL arena.

Actually, it's not that Cardinals fans don't have the numbers. They're just more well-behaved. Generally, if a ballplayer can't break a record or pass a major career milestone at home, Busch Stadium is his next choice.

My brother and I were just talking about how the Indians are seemingly every player's last stop before applying to Cooperstown. We are always willing to throw league min (and a starting roster position) at over-the-hill/injury-prone guys.

Man you could have taken back Manny! He's playing for a song this year (relatively speaking), and looks like he has something to prove. At least in spring training, he did, but he's off to a slow start now.

Feeling safe at a hockey game? It's because there's all this aggression on the ice through which fans can live vicariously. Baseball is just the opposite - so genteel, you barely touch a player on the opposing team more than once or twice a game.

Not that I really think there's anything to that, but, hey, you never know.

Oh, and Bosox fans...I just want to say...

Give your Red Sox a few more weeks, rather than worrying about the 0-4 start. Instead pay attention to the Boston Bruins, because, damn, Tim Thomas saved more than Jesus this year. They've got a real opportunity to go someplace.

But Taly, we're Sox fans...we're supposed to *****! (Angry Bill, I'm looking at you.)

BTW, my favorite sports time of year is coming up. The B's and C's in the playoffs and the Sox are getting under way. It's a lot of fun going to sports bars on nights when all three teams are playing at the same time and the college students are still in town. (I'm not sure why I like this--the last time I watched all three teams at once it was a nuclear meltdown. The Broons lost the first of 4 straight to the Flyers despite being up 3-0, the C's got toasted by LeBron and the Sox got beat by the Yankers. I had to be talked off the ledge.)

I concur with this statement. I wouldn't be worried if it was the hitting. Hitting goes through peaks and valleys. But the pitching is downright atrocious, which was supposed to be the strength of the team. Friggin' Josh Beckett has been the best pitcher through four games with giving up 3 runs in 5 innings. We know it'll get better, but it's an ominous start.

But, you see, that's the beauty of baseball. It could easily come down to the last game of the season, making the Sox wish they had won a couple of those "not so important" early-season games. Every game is critical, even though it often doesn't seem so.

Dodgers back to 3-3, about where I expect them to end up this year.

The Jays usually start very well. They don't fall out of contention until July. In any other division they'd have been a perennial threat for the division lead for the last several years, and in the NL they'd have been a shoe-in for a wildcard spot. (Not just based on their record, but also on not having to play the yankees and bosox nearly so often.)

::BREAKING NEWS::

Manny Ramirez has abrubtly announced his retirement after "Major League Baseball ... notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," and that, "Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the Drug Program will be completed. MLB will not have any further comment on this matter."
