You should live in LA and get to hear the reactions. Next thing you know, the Dodger Stadium parking lot will resemble a police state. Not that they shouldn't react somehow, but I have long since stopped taking my kids, or even going without them, to Dodgers-Giants games. They bring out the worst (and worst element) in Dodgers fans. I went with a Giants fan friend of mine about 15 years ago, and seriously felt physically threatened. I sold my Giants game tickets last year, just don't want to deal with it.

I actually hadn't heard any mention of drunkeness, Micheal, although I'm sure it was involved. It's not like Giants fans back down when confronted with the idiots, either. There seems to be a chip on the shoulder that they bring with them, and that will only be worse this year, now that they won the World Series. Not that that at all excuses cold-cocking a guy from behind and putting him in serious condition, or any fighting at all. There's also layers of other causality - NorCal vs. SoCal, ethnic relations, perhaps, and the ever-popular bashing of gays. Because all Giants fans are fags, right? /rolleyes

But someone really does have to stand up and say something, and the Dodgers ownership certainly isn't doing it.

I was thinking this morning about another factor that comes into play at Dodger Stadium, and probably Yankee Stadium, too - there's always the potential for a critical mass of Giants fans, given the amount of mixing and moving that goes on between SF and LA. San Diego? They're closer, but I can pretty much name all the Padres fans I know on one hand. Fans of other teams - Cards, Phillies, Cubs, etc. - just don't have the numbers to really make the people with no sense of self-esteem or identity feel threatened. I think the most fans I saw from the other team last year was at the Yankees-Dodgers game I went to - and I was surprised, people treated them pretty nicely, all in all. (And I was with a Yankee fan, too.)

My brother and I were just talking about how the Indians are seemingly every player's last stop before applying to Cooperstown. We are always willing to throw league min (and a starting roster position) at over-the-hill/injury-prone guys.

I am a Montréal Canadiens fan, which in the NHL is a bit like being a Yankees fan in MLB -- the Canadiens have such a long and storied history that one could make a compelling argument that they are the NHL and the other teams just exist to give them something to do, so you can find Canadiens fans in every hockey town in North America (and Europe.) I almost feel bad for a few other teams in Montréal's division. When playing the Ottawa Senators, for example (a two hour drive from Montréal), there are usually more Canadiens fans in attendance than Senators fans. In Toronto, it's less obvious, because it's very hard to get tickets to Leafs games, but there are always a sizable number of Canadiens sweaters in the crowd when they play. Boston and Buffalo too... it's nice to always have a little support in any arena you play in. Still, nobody would argue it's unsafe to cheer for a different team in an NHL arena.
