That second part is if you only watch the news. The news is great for finding issues to dig into deeper.
For example, I just finished a very lengthy scholarly discussion of the failings of psychological studies and experiments - actual, scientific experiements published by legitimate professors - into microaggression as a psychological hypothesis. Not any political problems, but the problems with microaggression as a psychological phenomenon. It took me well over an hour to read the whole thing, and I read fast.
That's what you should use news to find, not just a quick story. If you just TL; DR everything that takes more than 2 minutes to read, yes - you're misinformed or uninformed.
