That does not avoid the tax, it shifts the tax to other people. The tax itself still exists.

For an example of actually avoiding a Federal tax: If I don't make enough money, I don't pay income tax at all. I have avoided the tax.

Having failed to demonstrate that you can avoid the tax, I'll simply reiterate the point that you're advocating a tax to exist. If you exist in the US, you're obligated to the tax.

You shifted the goal posts. You said "how do you avoid the tax", and I told you. To avoid the overall tax, you have to win elections and get your representatives in congress.

Which is exactly what I said. If I don't make enough, I can apply and get Medicaid. I will then have the coverage I need to avoid the tax.

I didn't fail to demonstrate it, you failed to understand it.

There is no lack of understanding on my end regarding your point.

Shifting a burden of a tax is not avoiding a tax. It's pushing it off onto other people.

Demonstrate how you can exist in this country, and not be obliged to the tax imposed by the healthcare bill. You have failed to do so. You have demonstrated a method with which to fulfill the obligation of the tax, not a method to avoid it.

Perhaps the lack of understanding is yours.

DFK - in the post I responded to, you only said it could not be avoided, and it looked to me like you were talking about an individual person. If someone goes on medicare, *THEY* (caps for emphasis) avoid the tax. That's how you do it. I answered your question. Now you have shifted the goal posts.

If I live in this country, I am not obliged to pay this tax if I am on medicaid or if I am properly insured, correct?

False.

You are paying the tax by acquiring health insurance.

The tax isn't just the dollars Monty, it's the obligation. It's essentially an either/or statement: pay us money OR buy insurance.

Et tu Brute? Do I have to say it 3 times for the truth squad to support it?

It's being broken down into easily digestable portions and the truth is very hard to ignore at this point. The points are cited and supporting information is provided. Really a lot of us have nuked this topic from orbit, just to be sure.

False.

No I'm not. I'm paying for my health insurance, possibly through a private entity or a public one. A premium is not a tax. It might be *like* a tax, in your *opinion*, but it is not, in fact, a tax.

If I am on medicaid, I am not paying the tax by acquiring something. I am getting covered for free.

No, it's just the dollars. Don't expand the definition to fit your argument.

I agree that they are saying "get insurance or pay this tax. If you don't pay this tax, you will be fined". However, we are mixing all those things up, and it's inaccurate.

1) If you have insurance, you don't have to pay anything you aren't already paying. You current premiums don't suddenly become a tax, unless you want to extend the definition of what constitutes a tax to something ludicrous.

2) If you buy insurance from a private company, it's not a tax. The money is going to a private entity, and not the government.

3) If you aren't paying anything for your insurance (medicaid), then you aren't paying *anything* - tax or otherwise.

I don't need to.

English wrote:
–noun
1. a sum of money demanded by a government for its support or for specific facilities or services, levied upon incomes, property, sales, etc.
2. a burdensome charge, obligation, duty, or demand.

One of two listed definitions given. Therefore, if you purchase the insurance, you are fulfilling the second definition. If you instead pay the money, you are fulfilling the first definition.

Either way, it's a tax.

The tax is therefore an either/or situation; one that cannot be avoided.

Is there any purpose to your post what so ever, Screeling, but to flame me? You know, I get a lot of flak on this board for having an inflammatory posting style, but posts like yours are numerous and obnoxious, and don't do anything to contribute to our discussion or the tone around here.

DFK - your second definition is not the proper context. It's taxing to carry this log, or "I find screeling's posts to be taxing" is a more accurate read of that definition.

Stay in the context we are using. We are talking about government taxes - when the government collects money from it's citizens for the purposes of funding government services.

Suffice it to say, passing a kidney stone would likely be far less painful for the American economy and healthcare system.
