It may be that it isn't worthy of special mention and is only being used as a crutch or cover for the real underlying feelings. However if that is indeed the case, then it is the religious that have brought it on themselves by waving the word of God in everyone's faces saying that is the reason why gays shouldn't marry. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
First of all, it isn't "the religious" that have been "waving the Word of God in everyone's faces". Not everyone who is religious holds that position and they aren't waving anything in anyone's faces any more than those advocating gay marriage are throwing their sexual preferences in everyone's faces.
Second, even those religious people that DO oppose gay marriage have certianly not brought being represented as the sole source of anti-gay feeling on themselves. That's people who have a bone to pick with religion and using gay marriage as the excuse.

Obviously there are many denomonations which have been very welcoming to the gay community, so there are those who support the ideas of gay marriage within the religious community. However, I believe it is very fair to say they are a minority and no where near as vocal as those opposing gay marriage.
They are not as vocal, but then those denominations that aren't as vocal tend to be less vocal about practically everything. As to whether they're the minority, that's questionable. The Roman Catholic Church skews the numbers badly in a worldwide view because it outnumbers all the others put together, but they are hardly the most vocal on gay marriage. In any case, that being the minority view does not in any way excuse the misrepresentation of anti-same-sex marriage feeling as solely religious.. or more to the point solely Christian. Jews and Muslims are small minorities in this country but I don't believe either is terribly sympathetic to gays.. and worldwide, tell me.. would you rather be gay in the average Christian country or the average Muslim country?
