The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

In office for less then two week, and wins the prize. Can join such wonderful elightened company as Carter, Gore, Koffi (didn't they give one to Yassir Arafat?).

Wow, just...wow

Rather than recognizing concrete achievement, the 2009 prize appeared intended to support initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change.
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee said. "In the past year Obama has been a key person for important initiatives in the U.N. for nuclear disarmament and to set a completely new agenda for the Muslim world and East-West relations."
He added that the committee endorsed "Obama's appeal that 'Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.'"

He's winning the Nobel Prize because he is the first black president.

It was a foregone conclusion that Obama would win this year's Nobel Peace Prize. He made all the right speeches in all the right foreign nations. He got the Nobel Peace Prize for throwing his own nation under the bus: "If America wants to lead the world, it must start enacting policies the rest of the world supports." That said, it's kind of neat for the sitting President of the United States to win the Nobel Peace Prize in his first year. Because Obama has had neither the time nor the power to do anything substantive, it demonstrates the Nobel Peace Prize for what it is: a political approval stamp.

*watches my last bit of idealism die*

I have not always agreed with who won a Nobel Prize, but this is the first time I was aware that someone won for doing NOTHING.

I've long held that the only Nobels with any shred of credibility left are the ones for physics and chemistry.

The Nobel Prize for literature is generally ok.

I'm with you SG.

What happened to people like MLK, Ghandi, Mother Teresa, etc as winners?
Nitefox told me that Al Gore won it for his stupid Global Warming thingy. Seriously?

Mother Teresa was a bad choice. Doing nothing is more worthy of a nobel prize than teaching a nation in a population crisis about the evils of using birth control.

I was thinking more along the lines of her dedicating her entire life and sacrificing everything to love and care for people at the bottom, not about her politics. But yes, you have a very good point.

Regarding Obama,
I thought this quote was pretty good:
Quote:
Polish President Lech Walesa, a 1983 Nobel Peace laureate:

"This is probably an encouragement for him to act. Let's see if he perseveres. Let's give him time to act," Walesa said.

Yeah, about what I expected to see here on this.

Quote:
The Nobel committee recognized Obama's efforts to solve complex global problems including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons. Watch the announcement of Obama as 2009 Nobel Peace Prize recipient

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said.

Jagland said the decision was "unanimous" and came with ease.

He rejected the notion that Obama had been recognized prematurely for his efforts and said the committee wanted to promote the president just it had Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 in his efforts to open up the Soviet Union.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population," it said.

Bolding mine. I believe that is the relevant portion.

I'm pleased with the award and hope that is helps bear fruit with our diplomatic efforts abroad.

Why couldn't they promote the President after he actually did something then?

Seriously, you think he's already earned this award? Obama should decline it.

When did they add "Pillaging your countries tax base" as a major criteria for the Nobel Peace Prize?

lol, what a joke of an award this has become. He hasn't done anything! The people giving the award even say this!

Popularity contest, that's it. The feelgoodism award.

I am shocked that patriotic conservatives would be offended that the President of the United States was so honored. I would have expected celebration that the duly elected leader of our country had earned such a prestigous honor.

Considering that Gorbachev was de facto leader of the USSR from 1985 forward, implemented perestroika in 1986, introduced Glastnost in 1988, implemented the ability of citizens to own private businesses in a wide range of previously blocked areas also in 1988, created free elections in 1989, and as a result of his efforts, was elected to essentially the same post, but by general election this time, in 1990, that quote that you found to be "the relevant portion" is highly suspect and intellectually dishonest at best, an outright lie at worst.

Personally, the most important quote in that article is:

Quote:
Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline

Two weeks... so what exactly was the basis for his nomination? His stellar record of abstain or vacant on Senate bills for the single term he was in office for the US Senate?

I'd love to know on what credentials you think he was nominated, and how you think his previous performance in politics compares the achievements and actions of Gorbachev in the same time span prior to being awarded the Peace Prize.
