Not quite sure whether to put this in the Food section, but, decided to go for General.

I'm not a constant updater, so none of you know that we recently moved. Remember our last house, where Jasmy said "You're gonna have a lot of pomegranates!"? Well, we decided we couldn't pull off a remodel, and decided to move. Our new house is about double the size of the old one, has one pom tree (instead of three), and whole bunch of others.

Tonight, I discovered that we have a Pineapple guava tree. I've seen these fruits laying around on the street, then noticed that we had a few in our driveway. I figured that a squirrel had brought the over from some place else. But, the tree that I thought was a eucalyptus of some sort turns out to be a guava tree. Just amazing. Apparently, if we can get 7 pounds of fruit off of the thing, we can make some pretty *****' jam.

In addition to a random guava tree, we have a grapefruit tree, a tangerine, three avocados, and two orange trees that didn't like being neglected while the house was for sale. Not sure if they're going to come back. Plus, as far as I can determine, five banana trees, two papayas, an olive tree, and one pomegranate, so we can still get our anti-oxidants.

Crap, just realized that I didn't mention the coffee tree. I have breakfast just waiting out my doorstep ....

OMG! I hate you Aethien! (not really  ) I love my house and don't want to move, but I sure do wish it had a bit more available space for gardening. I'd love to grow more fruit trees and vegies and herbs and flowers...

Congrats on your new home and breakfast just outside your door!! :D

I would love something like that.

Here it is too warm for most fruit trees, but not quite warm enough for most citrus. Too humid for almonds also. The soil is an alkaline clay, so most plants except grasses not happy. Have a fig which is growing well, but the birds and squirrels get it all.

However, if you want to have a garden, and grow just about anything, we have a lot of land in California that will do the job.

Over in Davis there is a guy that grows an amazing amount of varieties of fruit, read

We plant, we mulch, and we grow everything, way out here . . .

Only in Southern California. Northern California does just fine for water, even with the Los Angeles water thieves trying to destroy our delta and rivers.

I hear ya on that, Aeg. At UCLA, some landscape-architect genius decided that olive trees would look nice in front of one of the buildings with a major walkway. They got tracked all over. That being said, there's a whole contingent of old Mediterranean ladies who trek all over LA and harvest the olives. At Caltech, in Pasadena, they actually harvest them and press them for oil.

That's a cool story, Micheal. I don't think we can get the really tropical trees to bear fruit down here. But, I do have a small crop of coffee beans that need to be shucked and roasted. Might be enough for one cup!

And, sorry for stealing your water. :D
