I have been working over 60 hours a week since 2 weeks before labor day weekend and nightshift (2200-0900) from Sept. 12 onward. I have no idea what day it is.

I am with you on both fronts :(

Hang in there, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner (at least that's what I tell myself).

I did that from last June (2009) until the first week of Sept. 2010. Left the house at 6:30 AM and didn't get home until close to midnight 5 days a week.

Now that I'm back down to a 40-50 hour work week I feel like I'm on vacation, hehe.

I'm fairly certain I would murder people if I had to work that much.

GAH, reactor is critical but still can't go into power ascension. I **** hate 1950-60's technology.

Not me. I like having money, and know what it takes to earn it.

This happened to me in Iraq. I only knew what day it was on Sunday because I went to church then,

You could offer me a quarter million annually and I still wouldn't do 6 AM to midnight. There's no point in making a lot of money if you're working 18 hour days, you have no time to spend it anyway.

Reactor is back online, supercritical @ 100% rated thermal and electrical power output.

However, there is a severely important leaking valve threatening plant operation that we told them to fix while the mode switch was in start-up (you can isolate the valve then, but not now) they chose not to fix when they had the chance. So we may come back offline ... because they didn't listen. FML.

Overtime for us too. Reactor coolant pump started shooting oil. Slapped a band aid on it and are waiting till next years outage to replace it. The new cooling tower basin had an o-ring snap and it looked like a wicked wave pool for a while. Then just two weeks ago something electronic in the turbine fried and caused the plant to trip, causing some mild panic from the noise and shaking to surrounding communities.

I guess you'll never make much money then.

For example, there are plenty of doctors turning down $200k salaries because the working conditions are just absolutely intolerable right now. I don't think I'm alone with that sentiment. I'm talking about working such hours on a long-term basis, as in for several years or more straight, not just a few weeks. But yes, if "making a lot of money" actually requires working 18 hour days for an extended period, then I probably won't make a lot of money.

For example, they're doctors. You're not. They've got considerable more marketability than someone struggling to make temp jobs work.
You let me know what jobs will let me pull in $250k working 9-5...

The whole point is that people who make considerable amounts of money are willing to do what it takes, and you obviously aren't. If you're making $30K, struggling to give your family the lives you want for them, and someone offers you the aforementioned $250k job and you don't take it it says a lot about what you'd be willing to sacrifice for your family. In the end, you're right, you're not alone. That's why some people tread water through life and others end up cruising in their own boat.

I don't expect $250k for a 9-5 job. That was kind of the point. And the point of that example was to show that there are clearly motivated (otherwise they'd never have made it out of med school/residency) people turning down such salaries because the work is too hard.

If I had a family, this might change. But right now, I'm willing to work 60, 70 hour weeks if necessary, and I'd say that puts me above the median. But 90+? You can forget that.

No the doctors you created as an example are turning down jobs that pay $200k, not because of the hours, but because they have the luxury to do it. They are marketable. They put in the hours to get where they are not just for a few weeks, but for several years.

You stated that you wouldn't take that job. Guess what they did, and now they are in a position where they can be a bit more choosy because of the effort they've already put forth. You may think you are above the median, but you'd be surprised what motivated people are willing to do to provide a future for themselves and/or their families.

I'm sorry, I'm really having a hard time grasping that you need to do nothing but work when you're not sleeping to provide yourself a future. That's a horribly bleak outlook on the world. The federal workweek is 40 hours, the majority of the populace gets by on something close to that. Hell I'm lucky if I can GET 40 hours a week of work, the only way I'd get 70 is if I offered to do 30 for free.

You're apparently not grasping the difference between "getting by" and "having a future". You don't have to work 90 hours a week to have a future, but it is one avenue.

When I was deployed, my normal weekly schedule was 80-100 hours per week. That, of course, ignores the possibility of a mortar attack or some **** at any time.

Yes, this is why I would recommend against anyone joining the armed forces. That "12 hours on, 12 hours off" schedule is absolutely brutal. You realize you were probably making less than minimum wage, right?

Not even close, unless you're going to count pay by all 24 hours in a day for the entire deployment, which is silly because A) you're not working all 24 hours and B) who cares? Minimum hourly wage sucks in the U.S. because you're trying to get by on 8 hours a day, 5 days a week of it. The amount I'm making per week still vastly exceeds what a minimum wage person could make in a work week.

In my case, I'm a senior Captain so my pay is pretty high to begin with. There's also hazard pay of various types on top of all this, and no income taxes.

Yes, 12/12 is brutal, but its only for a year, there's nothing else really to do (well there is, but you can only watch so many movies, play so much softball, etc.) and there's not a lot to spend money on. You sleep free, eat free, and if you're not a dumbass spending all your money on snacks, video games, extra gear that isn't issued to you and you don't really need anyhow, or buying a motorcycle or a car you come home with an assload of money in the bank, plus a nice little form you can add to any future job application - especially any government job - saying you're a combat veteran. All this plus whatever nice skills you learned from your MOS.

Really, don't be ridiculous. 12/12 is a reason not to join the military? It's only like that in the field and in combat. Please, don't sign up. We don't need more whiners.
