I'm actually offended at the notion of voting being a civic duty, as if it's my civic duty to vote between a socialist windbag who wants to give my money to poor people and a socialist windbag who wants to use my money to force their religion down my throat.

I still think that candidates should require a simple majority of the total potential votes to win. In other words, if your district has 6,000 eligible voters, 3,001 is required to win. If only 2,500 people vote, that office is empty until the next election cycle. If we want to have a two-party system where we edge out everyone else, than "none of the above," needs to be a valid choice. Right now, there are tens of millions of disenfranchised voters out there whose votes literally do not count. They don't approve of either bastard enough to vote for him, and their voices need to be heard and counted just as much as the assholes who vote for Republicans and Democrats.

You see, right now the tactic isn't to win an election by gaining support, it's to demoralize the other team so that their voters stay at home. That strategy should cause both candidates to lose. There are plenty of gerrymandered districts where a Republican or a Democrat runs unopposed. That isn't an election, that's a sham. That prick deserves to lose, too. He should have to convince people to vote for him just like everybody that runs against an opponent.

I voted early on Friday since I'm not at home this week.

As for it not being a duty.. it's a duty if you want to complain about things.

"I have solved this political dilemma in a very direct way: I don't vote. On Election Day, I stay home. I firmly believe that if you vote, you have no right to complain. Now, some people like to twist that around. They say, 'If you don't vote, you have no right to complain,' but where's the logic in that? If you vote, and you elect dishonest, incompetent politicians, and they get into office and screw everything up, you are responsible for what they have done. You voted them in. You caused the problem. You have no right to complain. I, on the other hand, who did not vote -- who did not even leave the house on Election Day -- am in no way responsible for that these politicians have done and have every right to complain about the mess that you created." - George Carlin

Amusingly, I voted for a third party candidate I dated briefly almost thirty years ago. She gets my vote every time she makes it on the ballot.

The wife and I voted after she got home from work. I thought it interesting how few positions the Democrats challenged. There was a Republican candidate for every office on the ballot and only about 1/3rd of them had challengers. There were no Independents or other party affiliation represented.

I have come up with what I consider a great way to break the two party monopoly though - refuse to indicate party affiliation on the ballots.

I'm quickly leaning toward the don't vote demographic.

After seeing the candidates in current and past elections, I'd just as soon pass.

The country will carry on much as it has been already regardless.

I have to say, that's been the most refreshing ballot in my voting career. I not only had 3rd party candidate options in almost every race (excluding judicial elections) and at every level, but in TWO of them, I had multiple 3rd parties to choose from!

Ditto. I felt like I had a choice between liars and pyschos ;)

That's racist.

Remember that news story where a town in one of the Carolina's tried to do that exact thing and basically "that's racist" was the Obama administration's response?
