I never got around to watching much anime before. Recently had a couple classic anime films suggested and enjoyed them: Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Does anyone have suggestions for some others?

Cowboy Bebop should be required anime anyone interested in the genre. It runs on Adult Swim all the time.

Cowboy Beebop should be recommended even for those who do not like the genre.

Anything Miyazaki...

Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Ninja Scroll
Wicked City
Cowboy Bebop
Ranma 1/2
Inuyasha
Naruto
Bleach
Gunsmith Cats
Riding Bean
Macross Plus
Vampire Hunter D

I believe that's all classic or close enough... Naruto is very Star Wars/Hero's Journey.

Nothing to add, my favorites have already been recommended.

I can't believe anyone would recommend Wicked City... D:

Not sure what you consider classic. Golden Boy is hilarious and is older. It only comes in a dubbed version, but it's great.

Otaku no Video is also old and quite amusing

Bubblegum Crisis 2040
FLCL
The Arimitage movies
Excel Saga maybe

Newer things:
Last Exile is awesome.
Seiryu no moribito (which i probably spelled wrong) is very good
Speed Grapher was interesting
Birdy Tetsuwan decode is also pretty interesting

I liked Full Metal Alchemist. And FMA: Brotherhood has been even better, in my opinion. Not exactly classic, but still good. You can actually watch all of Brotherhood on Hulu if you don't mind subs. Which I personally hate, but most anime fans will call me a heathen for it. All I have to say to that is **** you.

Eh? What? That's not true at all! Although, the dub is pretty damned epic. We had Doug Smith (Kintaro's VA) at my con a couple years ago, he's funny as hell

Also, I have no complaints with any of these recommendations, except one caveat - Naruto is LONG. Like, LONG LONG (220 episodes and 190 (and still going) for its sequel)... and its really not my style >_>

Id recommend Law of Ueki instead of Naruto, its about the same for how its story goes (facts are changed, but it feels the same way) and its much shorter and compact

Also, the R.O.D. OAV is epic. <3 Yomiko

I'd say you should watch Lyrical Nanoha as well, as because its my favorite EVAR, but it wont float everyone's boat

Thank you. Anyone who liked Try other than bashing it I have to like. Have you watched Revolution and Evolution-R Hopwin?

That is one of the best children's animes made. Adults tend to like it too. Good choice.

Are those the stand-alone "movies"?

Shows in the vein of Naruto and Bleach are too... cyclical for my taste anymore. I like shows that have an ending.

The Kenshin series was too preachy and I thought it's philosophy was insipid and foolish. It's also pales in comparison to the OVAs, which are fantastic.

Voice of Distant Star

His and Her Circumstances: you might like, although the anime gets sort of cut off while the manga goes on for a bit longer.

I haven't seen many of them, but Lupin III are classic

No, they're new seasons (Seasons 4 and 5), which came out a couple of years ago.

Huh, kinda surprised no one's mentioned Battle Angel yet.

Also, on the funnier side, All Purpose Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.

My first exposure to anime was 8th Man.

Nothing like a cigarette smoking robot FTW!
