Very well said. I much prefer "Fiscally Responsible" as a label over "Fiscally Conservative".

Actually NO that's NOT what I did. You're attempting to oversimplify people as conservative/liberal and I'm making a qualified statement rather than a broad one. That does NOT imply I'm throwing everyone in a universal conservative basket based on their stance on financial policy.

You want to play this game? Sure. Let's go. We'll throw out all the various issues we discuss, list them and then label the conservative/moderate/liberal stance and label everyone. We'll see who checks which box on each issue. Then everyone can tally their overall score and see if they average liberal, conservative or moderate.

Woah, wtf???

Don't mistake my defense of liberal posters to mean I'm liberal in any way. I'm not. I'm not as conservative as some folks, but I'm far more fiscally conservative than liberal.

By far.

Actually, I'll stop being snarky and actually answer this.

First, let's use the commonly accepted definitions of liberal and conservative.

Quote:
Conservatism (Latin: conservare, "to preserve") is a political and social philosophy that promotes the maintenance of traditional institutions and supports, at the most, minimal and gradual change in society. Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others oppose modernism and seek a return to the way things were.

Quote:
Liberalism (from the Latin liberalis, "of freedom") is the belief in the importance of individual liberty and equal rights. Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but most liberals support such fundamental ideas as constitutions, liberal democracy, free and fair elections, human rights, regulated capitalism, fair trade, and the separation of church and state.

Now, obviously individuals will not always fit exactly into these boxes, so for the sake of argument, I'm going to put folks into the containers that based on their posting and espoused views (admittedly a limited snapshot) tend to gravitate toward.

Those are apparently the opening paragraphs of the Conservatism and Liberalism pages, respectively, from Wikipedia, and not the entire paragraph in either case.

Of your conservative list, Aizle, off the top of my head...

Micheal gets moved to somewhere in the middle. He's a california republican, that's not conservative, generally.
Lenas gets moved to liberal.
Farther gets moved to liberal, based solely on his odd reaction to the firefighting thread.

Many of the others you listed as conservative I don't have a handle on politically at all.

My "Quick Survey" post was an attempt to show how useless attempting to classify the "liberal" vs. "conservative" dichotomy really is. I don't consider myself a liberal, (If you find and ask Monty I was the fascist bigoted conservative devil incarnate) but I answered those dozen "hot political issues" pretty solidly liberal all the same.

Correct. I was attempting to keep the definitions fairly simple and high level. On anything like this if you drill way down into the weeds, and start to look at individuals, they break down just like every generality does.

It would appear, however, that at least a couple posters here are more interested in nit picking at the concept of generalities.

Again Khross these are really high level definitions. There are many posters here who don't tend to support regulated capitalism and the concept of separation of chruch and state or I would argue liberal democracy. And even for those folks who do support some of those ideas, they lean more heavily toward the conservative side.

You mean, I'm sure, "at least a couple posters here are not interested in being broadly categorized into groups that do not fit them." No. No we are not.

However, the idea that Micheal, Amanar, Lenas, Aethien, Lonedar, and Lydiaa, at a glance, are primarily conservative is, based solely on your definitions, laughable to me.

To really "classify" anybody, as the authors of the OP study tried to do, you probably need at least 4 categories of behavior or mental outlook. You are trying to draw it into 1. For example, the idea that Taskiss and DE are both "conservative" and that I'm "conservative" is bothersome to me, as I find both of them to be so highly authoritarian as to be bothersome (that isn't to say that they aren't necessarily good people, I'm just using them as examples).

Indeed, depending on where we're discussing things and on what topics, I almost guarantee I'm more "liberal" than you. For example, do you favor the wholesale legalization of all "narcotic" drugs? No, well then obviously you're "conservative."

All we're really doing here is establishing that "conservative" and "liberal" are broad generalizations, and that people may fall into one category, the other, or both depending on the issue at hand.

Moreover, the brief summations Aizle posted seem to be older definitions referring to "classical" liberals and conservatives and are somewhat obsolete. For example, the conservative definition refers to wanting to avoid change or to return to the way things were, and the liberal one refers to valuing liberty. Yet we frequently see it claimed here that a return to the way things were (circa the late 18th early 19th century, more or less) would mean an increase in individual liberty.

By that, we could either gather that liberal and conservative are the same thing, or that they refer to completely unrelated things. Yet clearly everyone understands that they are generally supposed to be in opposition to each other.

If I were asked to sum up how the words are generally used in everyday converation, I would define "liberal" as "someone who generally favors government regulation in order to attempt to improve the life of the everyday person, who believes that social justice can be achieved through the correct regulation, and who favors high spending and high taxation from the government" while a "conservative" would be "someone who believes that more than minimal regulation is harmful to the condition of the everyday person, who does not believe social justice can be improved through regulation or does not believe such a concept is meaningful, and who favors low rates of spending and low taxation with greater emphasis on programs with tangible aspects as oppose to social ones."

There's no way I'm a conservative as defined by Fox News.

Classical liberal.

It can be kinda hard to just lump people into two categories. Personally, it does seem to me that the "right" out numbers the "left" sometimes, but I can depend on who is deciding to post in a thread or not.
