For TheRiov, we can figure out how liberal or conservative the board is.

Label the following true or false:

1. Abortion should be legal for any reason before fetal viability.
2. Governments should allow marriage between any two consenting adults, regardless of sex.
3. Universal Health Care should be a legal right.
4. Taxation should be progressive, not flat (nor consumption based.)
5. Church and State should be entirely separate.
6. Public Education should be a legal right.
7. Ensuring people don't fall through the cracks is more important than Economic Stability.
8. Capital Punishment should never be an option - we cannot let government have the ability to execute its citizens.
9. Society and the economy should be planned and structured so as to provide the greatest good to the greatest number.
10. The free market, left to itself without regulation, is a dangerous thing, and so it needs government oversight.
11. Paying taxes to support those less fortunate than yourself is both moral and your duty as a citizen.
12. People's "right to bear arms" is not absolute, and certain weapons should be restricted by law for the safety of society as a whole. (IE. Elmo's basement Nukes).

Tally up your "True" answers (current popular definition of liberal) and "False" answers (current popular definition of conservative) to find your place on the scale.

happy to answer the survey but I wouldn't consider these questions as a good litmus test (would rather see a continuum than T/F)

No doubt, but I didn't have that much time. I actually also was about to post this:

Quote:
it occurs to me this list is biased in favor of conservative types. Let's also twist it around:

True or False:

1. Abortion should never be legal except for cases where the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother.
2. Governments should only validate marriage between a man and a woman.
3. Health Care should only be private, government should stay out of it.
4. Taxation should be flat. (Or nonexistent)
5. Church and State are inseparable.
6. Education should be paid for out of private funds.
7. Economic stability is more important than ensuring people don't fall through the cracks.
8. Capital Punishment should be available for the most severe criminal offenses.
9. Government should not get involved in social or economic planning of any kind.
10. The free market is the most important freedom we can possess.
11. Taxation should be limited to what a government needs in order to protect our rights.
12. I should legally be able to arm myself with anything i can acquire -- even weapons of mass destruction.

Now it's reversed: Tally up your True (conservative) and false (liberal) answers and count them against the first set. (It occurred to me you may answer false to both the original and its mirror, if you're in between.)

The two together probably provide a better test.

Meh! I really struggle with this one. The older I get the less I think this is true.

Quote:
2. Governments should allow marriage between any two consenting adults, regardless of sex.

False, government should not be involved in marriage, regardless of sex. Government should allow any two consenting adults to enter into a contract.

Quote:
3. Universal Health Care should be a legal right.

WTF no.

Quote:
4. Taxation should be progressive, not flat (nor consumption based.)

I think this is an unfortunate necessity.

Quote:
5. Church and State should be entirely separate.

Entirely? The first amendment does not grant freedom from religion.

Quote:
6. Public Education should be a legal right.

No, but it should remain a public priviledge, for now.

7. Ensuring people don't fall through the cracks is more important than Economic Stability.

Quote:
8. Capital Punishment should never be an option - we cannot let government have the ability to execute its citizens.

False

Quote:
9. Society and the economy should be planned and structured so as to provide the greatest good to the greatest number.

Yes. Best way to do that is a free market.

Quote:
10. The free market, left to itself without regulation, is a dangerous thing, and so it needs government oversight.

Minimal.

Quote:
11. Paying taxes to support those less fortunate than yourself is both moral and your duty as a citizen.

False.

Quote:
12. People's "right to bear arms" is not absolute, and certain weapons should be restricted by law for the safety of society as a whole. (IE. Elmo's basement Nukes).

Sigh - hate to answer this way, but true. No slippery slopes allowed....

5 true, 6 false, based on how I think you will interpret my answers. 1 on the fence.

1. Abortion should be legal for any reason before fetal viability - T
2. Governments should allow marriage between any two consenting adults, regardless of sex. - T
3. Universal Health Care should be a legal right. - F
4. Taxation should be progressive, not flat (nor consumption based.) - F
5. Church and State should be entirely separate - T
6. Public Education should be a legal right. - The answer to this question is not possible with T or F
7. Ensuring people don't fall through the cracks is more important than Economic Stability - F
8. Capital Punishment should never be an option - we cannot let government have the ability to execute its citizens. - F
9. Society and the economy should be planned and structured so as to provide the greatest good to the greatest number. - F
10. The free market, left to itself without regulation, is a dangerous thing, and so it needs government oversight - See Below
11. Paying taxes to support those less fortunate than yourself is both moral and your duty as a citizen. - F
12. People's "right to bear arms" is not absolute, and certain weapons should be restricted by law for the safety of society as a whole. (IE. Elmo's basement Nukes) - T

Regarding #6 - I see public education as a means to providing equal opportunity and should exist as a means to provide that opportunity, but should not be practiced as it is currently in the US and continued enrollment (or use of that opportunity) should be based upon merit and effort, not mandated by law.

Regarding #10 - Your statement is misleading, as "oversight" typically means managing the market, whereas the role of government (which wasn't a necessity in the most basic free markets) is to ensure the markets are free. Protecting the rights of the parties equally is needed, not management.

7-5 liberal.

On my second set of questions:

1. Abortion should never be legal except for cases where the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother. - False
2. Governments should only validate marriage between a man and a woman. - False
3. Health Care should only be private, government should stay out of it. - False

I agree. The intent of the question is that everyone has a right to display that merit and effort, and therefore acquire the education. If you could answer "True" to that, then answer "True" to the question.

Clarified then: I do intend to use the term "oversight" to mean "Managing." Merely providing a legal structure in which people can ensure their contracts and such will be upheld is not government oversight. If you blieve the government should take an active role in managing the markets, even partially, answer true.

1. Abortion should be legal for any reason before fetal viability. - absolutes ("Any") normally generate an automatic "false" from me, but I'm closer to Generally T than F
2. Governments should allow marriage between any two consenting adults, regardless of sex. - T
3. Universal Health Care should be a legal right. - T
4. Taxation should be progressive, not flat (nor consumption based.) Eh. On the fence. Dont like flat, but could work depending on particulars
5. Church and State should be entirely separate. - T
6. Public Education should be a legal right T
7. Ensuring people don't fall through the cracks is more important than Economic Stability. - Heavily biased wording on this question. There is no "more important" here. "Falling through the Cracks" implies some form of social saftey net, which many of our more conservative posters would like to see abolished all together. -
8. Capital Punishment should never be an option - we cannot let government have the ability to execute its citizens. - True
9. Society and the economy should be planned and structured so as to provide the greatest good to the greatest number. Two Vastly different categories there. Society vs. Economics and what aspect of society are we talking about? This one is just too up in the air. Yes there should be SOME structure.
10. The free market, left to itself without regulation, is a dangerous thing, and so it needs government oversight. - Without which we have robber barons, etc. - T again--to an extent
11. Paying taxes to support those less fortunate than yourself is both moral and your duty as a citizen. - T
12. People's "right to bear arms" is not absolute, and certain weapons should be restricted by law for the safety of society as a whole. (IE. Elmo's basement Nukes). - T - but again this question is heavily biased (particularly the example. I don't think anyone would be ok with individuals owning WMD --

The questions are biased though - I don't believe the government should have anything to do with marriage, for instance, it shouldn't be necessary for them to "allow" anything. School is a right that should never be denied by the government, but that doesn't mean the government should necessarily provide the funding, health care shouldn't be a concern of the government in any way, shape or form, and so on and so forth.

If the questions were worded appropriately, I'd be a dead center centrist, leaning fiscally conservative and just a touch socially liberal.

About the only thing I'm radical about is smaller government.

Label the following true or false:

1. Abortion should be legal for any reason before fetal viability. FALSE
2. Governments should allow marriage between any two consenting adults, regardless of sex. FALSE, as government shouldn't be in the business of marriage
3. Universal Health Care should be a legal right. FALSE
4. Taxation should be progressive, not flat (nor consumption based.) FALSE
5. Church and State should be entirely separate. FALSE, though I dislike the phrasing
6. Public Education should be a legal right.FALSE
7. Ensuring people don't fall through the cracks is more important than Economic Stability. FALSE
8. Capital Punishment should never be an option - we cannot let government have the ability to execute its citizens. My viewpoint isn't strong on this. If we eliminated abortion, I'd have no problem eliminating a death penalty. I have no problem erring on the side of caution.
9. Society and the economy should be planned and structured so as to provide the greatest good to the greatest number. FALSE
10. The free market, left to itself without regulation, is a dangerous thing, and so it needs government oversight. FALSE
11. Paying taxes to support those less fortunate than yourself is both moral and your duty as a citizen. FALSE
12. People's "right to bear arms" is not absolute, and certain weapons should be restricted by law for the safety of society as a whole. (IE. Elmo's basement Nukes). In the middle. There are certain weapons I would ban most likely.

False.
10. The free market, left to itself without regulation, is a dangerous thing, and so it needs government oversight.

11. Paying taxes to support those less fortunate than yourself is both moral and your duty as a citizen.
False. I do not believe in shared reward without shared risk.
12. People's "right to bear arms" is not absolute, and certain weapons should be restricted by law for the safety of society as a whole. (IE. Elmo's basement Nukes).
False. We now just make it so the privledged or the criminal can afford to defend themselves.

10/12 false

False

Looks like I'm 10 false and 2 true.

Set 1: 1. Abortion should be legal for any reason before fetal viability.: False. Abortion should not necessarily be legal or illegal; it should be regulated by individual states. If the question refers only to the Federal government then the answer would be True (since it should be Federally legal all the ime; the Federal government should not concern itself with Abortion). If the question refers to what I want my state to do, then I would answer True.

2. Governments should allow marriage between any two consenting adults, regardless of sex.: False. Same as abortion; it should be determined by the individual states, I think my state should allow marriage between consenting adults regardless of sex, and I think the Federal government has no business concerning itself with marriage except insofar as it absolutely must (i.e. determining military next of kin and the like)

3. Universal Health Care should be a legal right. False. Healthcare is a good; it should not be a right.

4. Taxation should be progressive, not flat (nor consumption based.) False. The goal of taxes is to provide revenue, not to satisfy "fairness" ideas for their own sake.

5. Church and State should be entirely separate. True. However, "entirely separate" should also not be a license to regulate Free Speech or Freedom of Religion in the name of "separation"; this is really just allowing the State to regulate the Church.

6. Public Education should be a legal right.: False. Education should be provided as a privilege based on performance in attaining said education.

7. Ensuring people don't fall through the cracks is more important than Economic Stability.: Unsure what the question is referring to.

8. Capital Punishment should never be an option - we cannot let government have the ability to execute its citizens.: False. There is no particular reason the goivernment should not have the ability to execute a citizen. What matters is the conditions under which it may do so.

9. Society and the economy should be planned and structured so as to provide the greatest good to the greatest number.: False. Society and the economy cannot be meaningfully planned or structured without creating unintended consequences that ultimately do more harm than good to the greatest number. The proposition is self-defeating

10. The free market, left to itself without regulation, is a dangerous thing, and so it needs government oversight.: True, in an absolute sense. However, government oversight can be just as dangerous as the free market, and in turn needs strict limitations. What matters is not the presence or absence of regulation, what matters is that regulations serve a legitimate purpose and are abandoned when no longer needed. Regulations should be aimed at averting physical catastrophes, whether personal or societal, not at unacehievable goals of social justice.

11. Paying taxes to support those less fortunate than yourself is both moral and your duty as a citizen.: False. This proposition places the moral burden exclusively on the more fortunate person and fails to place burden on the less fortunate. It is a moral hazard.

12. People's "right to bear arms" is not absolute, and certain weapons should be restricted by law for the safety of society as a whole. (IE. Elmo's basement Nukes).: True. Individuals should not have access to weapons that would be catastrophic for the society as a whole if misused.

Question set 2.

1. Abortion should never be legal except for cases where the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother.:False. Same reasoning as above question 1.

2. Governments should only validate marriage between a man and a woman.: False. Same reasoning as above question 2.

3. Health Care should only be private, government should stay out of it.: False. The government should rgualte healthcare insofar as it needs to in order to make sure that healthcare that is provided is provided safely. However, the government should not attempt to influence the supply or demand for healthcare, nor attempt to provide it for anyone other than its own employees.

4. Taxation should be flat. (Or nonexistent): False. Again, taxation should not be any one way for the sake of the taxation method. It should certainly not be nonexistant

5. Church and State are inseparable.: False. Clearly, they can be separated. If the question is should they be separated, then yes.

6. Education should be paid for out of private funds.: False. Education should not necessarily be paid for exclusively by private means. However, public funding of education should be limited to students who continue to demonstrate adequate performance.

7. Economic stability is more important than ensuring people don't fall through the cracks.: Don't know what this refers to.

8. Capital Punishment should be available for the most severe criminal offenses.: True. There is no particular reason to warehouse people simply to avoid executing them, and doing so is arguably more cruel and is more expensive

9. Government should not get involved in social or economic planning of any kind.: True. To do so almost inevitably creates problems worse than the benefits

10. The free market is the most important freedom we can possess.: False, on the precise wording. It is not really possible to define any one freedom as most important since all affect the others. However if the question were "The free market is essential to a free society" then that would be True. A Free market, however, is not a completely unregulated market; it is one regulated to a minimum in order to prevent physical catastrophe from rendering the market irrelevant, and to prevent it self-destructing due to exploitation of market forces to render it de facto no longer free. The practical ability of the market to function is more important than it meeting any arbitrary philosophical idea of a "free market".

11. Taxation should be limited to what a government needs in order to protect our rights.: False. The question presumes that there is agreement on what those rights are and what things protect them and what do not.

12. I should legally be able to arm myself with anything i can acquire -- even weapons of mass destruction.: False. Your right to arm yourself is limited to your personal ability to utilize weapons in your personal interests, whether defensive, sporting, or whatever. There is nothing wrong with forming arrangements with other people to utilize weapons whose operation requires more people for either recreation or the common defense. However, weapons whose misuse poses a threat to society as a whole should only be controlled by society through its duly constituted government.

As long as you think this is accurately defines the ideologies, and as long as you subscribe to the "one drop rule".

edit: I can't add.

This, I agree with; sadly. Later I think I would like to delve further into the questions and give more than True or False. Many of these questions cannot be answered by a simple yes or no.

You'll note i never stated federal government specifically, above. So any of you who object or based your answer on "the fed should stay out of it, it's a states issue" should revise.

That just makes some of the questions impossible to answer.
