of his own ethics trial:

WSJ
Quote:
WASHINGTON—Rep. Charles Rangel walked out on his ethics trial as it began Monday, saying it was unfair to ask him to continue without a lawyer that he couldn't afford.

You mean his campaign couldn't afford:

Quote:
Mr. Rangel's legal team left the case last month after he ran out of money to pay them from his campaign accounts.

He's just an unadulterated POS.

An entertaining one though.

His antics stopped being interesting to me about the third time he pulled his faux "reinstate the draft" tirade.

He committed more ethics violations while attempting to defend his ethics violations. What more is needed to convict this nitwit?

Of course the moment the ethics committie says he's guilty they might as well get ready for the cries of racism. Unfortunatly places like NYC, Detroit, Philly etc will never get cleaned up.

I'd be very suprised if this ever goes to a trial. Taking down Rangle in a trial will just open up others to the same investigation. The good ole boys club do not want that. I suspect that the panel will find violations, reccomend some slap on the wrist instead of a trial, and Charlie will quietly fade from view citing his age as a reason not to run again. Only after he's free and clear on any money he's skimmed off the PAC coffers, and after he's test marketed his replacement.

I suspect you're correct, and welcome to politics, and more specifically human nature.

So they found him guilty of 11 out of 13 violations.

I'm guessing that with a "prosecutor" who gives statements like this:
Quote:
Chisam also said, "I see no evidence of corruption" by Rangel. Rather, he suggested, the congressman was "overzealous" and "sloppy in his personal finances."

he won't get much of a penalty.

What do you suppose your penalty would be had you been "overzealous" and "sloppy in your personal finances."?

Same as it would be if I omitted income or forgot to file a tax return. It only matters if you get caught, and it doesn't matter if you've got enough political pull.

I'd be investigated by the SEC and the Bar. If I was found in violation of 11 out of 13 charges, I'd have my licenses revoked, and be going to the pen.

The committee recommended "censure".

Quote:
When a lawmaker faces censure, the resolution includes a verbal admonition, which may be administered by the Speaker reading the resolution to the Member at the bar of the House.

The truly sad part may be that this is considered a tough punishment in Congress.

So he has twelve violations and he gets the same punishment as A guy who speaks out of turn? Crazy.

Precedence, one they don't want to set for if/when they get caught.

Hang him in the public square. Seriously people should march in there and hang the guy, drag him right out of session.

This is the heart of it right here. By slapping wrists they're protecting themselves and their own potential corruption. They have the power to minimize any personal accountability for themselves.

I wish someone who got convicted of these "crimes" would sue for discrimination.

Has Rangel actually broken any laws, as opposed to just House ethics rules?
