I'm in charge of making hors d'oeuvres for Thanksgiving at my brother-in-laws! I need some simple ideas that are easy and transportable (it's about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive). There will only be 5 of us (I think) but need something to go along with drinks before dinner.

Man, I looooove those little sliced tortilla roll-up things with the ham and the cream cheese in them.

Oh and also, can't go wrong with sliced summer sausage and cheddar cheese with some good crackers.

Carnivore, Plantivore, or Omnivore?

Carnivore - Li'l Smokey's cooked in a decent BBQ Sauce, in a crock pot, doesn't get much easier and they get eaten.
Plantivore - Just buy a veggie tray of suitable size, try to get something more interesting than ranch dressing for the dip
Omnivore - both of the above.

Of course if you want to go fancier ask the cooks, I'm being lazy.

My sister does these little mincemeat pies, assorted home made cookies, bbq'ed veggies, pickled lots of stuff - but then she makes it all herself (even some of the pickling). For a cast iron Type A ***** (but I do love her even with that side of her), she can cook up a storm. She tells me to get off my duff and make something to bring, or where to stop to pick up something she hasn't had time to get. I really don't enjoy cooking, but one doesn't blow her off.

Did I mention she's a CFO for a small town in Silicon Valley and makes three time what I do?

Hmmm...Micheal that's a great idea. I have a Stay or Go slow cooker by Hamilton Beach which is transportable. Lil Smokies or meatballs, either way it's good! Got a recipe for a sauce from a friend Im gonna try out for this! :)

and believe me, we are talking carnivores when it comes to the men, more omnivores for the women :mrgreen:

Edit: Gotta have the ubiqutous vegie tray with dips :P

I've decided meatballs would be too heavy with a traditional turkey dinner later, so am going with...

hot crab dip with crostini
clam dip with chips (traditional holiday fare for hubby's family)
salmon pinwheels
roasted rosemary cashews
and a vegie tray

I know there is a lot of seafood there, but his family all love it! Their usual appetizers are clam dip with chips, smoked oysters, a couple kinds of olives, and occasionally a brie wheel with crackers. I wanted to do something a little bit different this time...and everything I saw that interested me was seafood related. :P

Gonna do a "Happy Hour" type meal here soon and will make meatballs and other happy hour type foods for supper....hubby and I both love that kind of meal where you can just "graze" and so does my sister in law. Last time they were over I put out an antipasto tray and she said she could make supper out of just that! :)

Actually Midgen, I thought of those too. A friend was telling me about some crab stuffed deviled eggs yesterday, that I may try this weekend. If they are any good, I may take some of those as well. He and his girlfriend say they are delicious!
