Anyone who's walked down Santa Monica Boulevard on Halloween night is well aware there are plenty of tasteless costumes out there.

From over-sexed nuns to ... well, we can stop our list of examples at over-sexed nuns. That pretty much sums up tasteless costumes.

Well, this year, you may notice a new tasteless costume in Los Angeles: The "Illegal Alien."

"He didn't just cross a border, he crossed a galaxy!" according to the costume's description. "He's got his green card, but it's from another planet! Sure to get some laughs, the Illegal Alien Adult Costume includes an orange prison-style jumpsuit with 'Illegal Alien' printed on the front, an alien mask and a 'green card.'"

But not everyone thinks the costume is sure to get some laughs.

It's "distasteful, mean-spirited and ignorant of social stigmas and current debate on immigration reform," says Angelica Salas.

Salas, of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, has asked Minneapolis-based retailer Target to remove the costume from its website. Target spokesman Joshua Thomas told The Associated Press that the company is removing the costume after receiving several complaints.

But, Salas' work is far from over.

The costume also appears online at walgreens.com, toysrus.com, amazon.com, meijer.com and buycostumes.com.

Thomas told the AP that Target never intended to sell the outfit but included it in its online offerings by mistake. Sounds like we may be hearing that excuse from a few other retailers in the near future.

There's a picture of the costume at the link.

oh for crying out loud. They need to get over themselves.

I sincerely hope that the members of CHIRLA find a bag of Die filled Die that they are willing to eat. All of them.

... Maybe people who'd wear it are NOT ignorant about the current debate surrounding immigration reform, and are making a statement about it?

Double LOL points if it's someone of Mexican descent wearing the costume! Triple if someone calls them a racist before they unmask!

Now, see, if you had two Men in Black walking around behind someone in that costume, it would be pretty amusing. It's OK as it is, though.

If they aren't citizens of this country, indeed, who cares?

Me.

Don't you? I mean, are non citizens less human than citizens to you? Are they human? Or are they something else, like this costume implies? I don't find the costume funny. It's racist, and immature. Now, someone may be ok with that, but folks shouldn't assume that those who take offense do so without reason.

You know exactly who they are targeting - Latino undocumented workers. Or, do you honestly think they are talking about Irish immigrants, or maybe Russian immigrants?

I call them undocumented, because I refuse to call them "Alien" and help to dehumanize them, nor do I believe a person can be illegal. People can commit illegal acts, but that does not make them illegal as individuals.

Is that a separate race from latino that I wasn't aware of?

Elmo, do you have a point to make? If you're just going to snipe from the sidelines, I'll stop responding.

Yet by coming here without the proper papers, they have commited an illegal act.

First amendments all around! I am free to laugh and poke fun at Illegal Immigrants, and that is what they are! And they can get pissy pannty twisted over it.

This illegal presence in this country makes them an illegal individual on this soil, in all regards.

I disagree. They committed a crime in coming here. However, they are not continually committing a crime every day they stay. A crime is an act. If I rob a bank, I am not comitting a new robbery every day I hang on to the money. People are not illegal. Actions are.

Yes they are. It's a crime to be in this country without having entered legally.

Facepalm worthy statement from you considering your adjectives of others. That aside- illegal alien is a status. Therefore if they meet the qualifications of that status, they are in fact illegal aliens. Undocumented can be another term for it.

They broke the law in coming here. They are currently breaking the law by staying here. They are breaking the law working here. In some cases they possess forged documents to take advantage of the services offered to citizens. They consume resources directly and indirectly, taking away from those who are here legally or are citizens. Others are breaking the law by employing them.

It is not a victimless crime, and their plight, race, sex, creed, religion, or age does not take away from the crimes they are committing. It's another reason why justice is supposed to be blind, so the rule of law is equally applied, not bastardized down to whoever can get the hearts to bleed the most.

If I commit a crime, I expect to be judged exactly how you would be, and how every other person on the board would be. Yet we know that is false.
