Argh! This is driving me nuts!

There was this movie out recently (I did not see said movie, just images from it) that had a blue glowing guy with a circle in his forehead and energy flowing off of him. I think it was some sci-fi/fantasy film.

Any idea who that may be?

Best guess.

Bald?

Animated or live action?

Older or younger actor?

How can people not have seen The Watchmen?

It's so awesome and about as close to the graphic novel as you could have hoped in a Hollywood film.

I appreciated the movie for being a *very* faithful redition of the comic. The special effects were quite good.

But the overall Watchmen story I have never found particularly engaging. I've never really understood why it was hailed as some masterpiece. Perhaps the timing and being one of the early comics to show anti-hero's as "good guys", but really I find my self not giving two shits for any of the characters. Each of them is so fatally flawed in some way as to be useless as a role model IMHO.

They're not supposed to be role models, that was what was so groundbreaking about the comic. They are supposed to be real people, dealing with this kind of crazy crap. Flawed, corrupted, prideful, damaged people.

Yeah. I guess I've never found that type of literary style appealing in the slightest. If I want to observe a bunch of real people dealing with crazy crap that are flawed, corrupted, prideful and damaged, I'll go to work, walk around my neighborhood or look in the mirror.

I felt the movie was better than the comic. Except for the reason the war is averted in the movie was mega lame compared to the comic. Overall, Watchmen is pretty overrated, though. Enjoyable, but not this super awesome thing a lot of people say it is.

Yeah, whereas I have always been drawn to more realistic stories. Different strokes, I suppose.

It's not a matter of realism, per se.

It's okay for characters to be deeply flawed, so long as they are still compelling to the audience and the audience can identify with and sympathize/empathize with at least one of them (the protagonist). In the end, I found the only character I at all came close to sympathizing with was Rorshach -- and he was a complete racist bigoted sexist homophobic batshit crazy ****. (That's even more obvious in the comic than the movie.) I was unable to identify with any of the characters, there was no compelling protagonist, just a big group of people I didn't like.

Ha, it just occured to me, in a moment of irony, that an inability to identify with and/or sympathize with any of the characters should have made me able to identify with Dr. Manhattan, who ultimately had the same problem with humanity in general.

But I didn't.

For me and my wife, the movie's biggest weakness is what others consider it's biggest strength: it is too faithful to the comic (well, other than there's no space squid). The story, while working in comic book form, feels spread too-thin and as such you just don't get to come to get to know or sympathize with a lot of the cast as much as you should. The movie needed to be at least 45 minutes shorter.

Not intended as a defense to the movie or comic (since I agree with you on not sympathizing with the characters), but I feel your last sentence is contradictory to the first one. 45 minutes less screen time would have given us even less time to come to sympathize with them. (Although they failed anyway.)

Well, by 45 minutes less I also meant cutting out unnecessary characters' development as well as part of that cut. Thus giving the movie more time to flesh out fewer, and more main, characters. I guess I should have explained a little bit.
