I guess I was remembering the reports prior to when they retrieved the Choenan's wreckage. I would imagine they can pretty easily conclude that a torpedo was or was not the cause (seems that it was) and circumstantial evidence pretty much points to one source.

Though, Japan has always been suspiciously silent on all matters which I always found odd considering their proximity and historical involvement. Although, I wouldn't ever suggest they performed a clandestine operation just incite tensions in the area too fulfill some hitherto unexplained strategic motive. No, such suggestions borderline on manic idiocy rivaling that of former board members who may or may not have worn masks.

Rather, I'd just like to know why they haven't had any great publicized statements on the matter.

I wouldn't say that Japan has been silent on all matters; they've protested every missile and satellite launch from NK, IIRC.

Japan has been somewhat vocal. Here is an AP article from back when NK announced and then launched a missile. Japan being so close has to be on the defensive, and they were, at least in this case, one of the first to spur some action.

If you consider the UN 'action', at least. :p

The picture in that article about sums up Japan's position nicely, from what I know.
