I usually see snakeshot shells in .38 special, haven't seen .22's, but I haven't been looking, either.

And I figured as much, Hannibal. But that's just common sense if you will be away from population centers on your trip through a desert. I wouldn't say common sense is not a reason to live here, though ;p

What's the best method of killing, curing, and cooking a rattle-snake?

Here's the ones I remember:

They have some new ones that look like they hold more shot though, looks like a pretty effective way to express one's love to a big fat rattler...

Rynar,

With a roadrunner, but they will probably want first dibs on the meat. Decapitation works well if you want to eat it, also separates those nasty venom sacs from the meat. My buddy's dad killed it with a machete while we were camping, 40 years ago.

Curing, no idea, only rattlesnake I've ever eaten went from hissing to frying pan in about 20 minutes.

I've only had it fried in bacon grease, on a camping trip I barely remember (except for the actual killing of the snake, that was an intense few seconds) down in a desert in Southern California, I can't even tell you which one. It tasted like most small pieces of meat fried in bacon grease. I didn't think it tasted much like chicken.

Not what you're looking for, but if you want to make a hat band - http://www.ehow.com/how_5161071_cure-snake-skin.html

Exactly, but the real life version. They kill rattlers on a regular basis.

Presuming you're talking about the Canadian geese we have so much around here (since that's what I thought Xeq was talking about), you've committed 4 federal crimes.

That, as far as I can tell, provides no exemption.

You are likely liable for civil fines up to $100,000; criminal fines up to $200,000; and up to 4 years in prison, depending upon the current status of the species. In addition, any real property you hold that was used, however marginally, in the act is subject to forfeiture and liquidation by the government, including merely owning the land on which you "took" the species.

Keep in mind, IANAL, but you may not want to claim geese-termination on the interweb. ;)

Canadian Geese aren't in any way endangered.

I don't believe Canada Geese are protected under any of those laws seeing as the Department of Agricultre actually kills them as pests.
Coro, the U.S. Air Force thanks you for your efforts, but points out that you have a long way to go seeing as the geese have an E-3C Sentry and its entire crew to their credit:

Quote:
In North America, non-migratory Canada Goose populations have been on the rise. The species is frequently found on golf courses, parking lots and urban parks, which would have previously hosted only migratory geese on rare occasions. Owing to its adaptability to human-altered areas, it has become the most common waterfowl species in North America. In many areas, non-migratory Canada Geese are now regarded as pests. They are suspected of being a cause of an increase in high fecal coliforms at beaches.[6] An extended hunting season and the use of noise makers have been used in an attempt to disrupt suspect flocks.

Since 1999, The United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services agency has been engaged in lethal culls of Canada Geese primarily in urban or densely populated areas. The agency responds to municipalities or private land owners, such as golf courses, who find the geese obtrusive or object to their waste.[7] Addling goose eggs and destroying nests are promoted as humane population control methods.[8]

In 1995, a US Air Force E-3 Sentry aircraft at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska struck a flock of Canada Geese on takeoff and crashed, killing all 24 crew. The accident sparked efforts to avoid such events, including habitat modification, aversion tactics, herding and relocation, and culling of flocks.[9] A collision with a flock of migratory[10] Canada Geese resulted in US Airways Flight 1549 suffering a total power loss after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport, New York City, New York on 15 January 2009.[11] The pilot brought the plane to an emergency 'splash'-landing in the Hudson River causing only minor injuries to the 155 passengers and crew.[12]

Not according to a FAQ from the State of Colorado, last updated July, 2010: "Canada geese, as with all migratory birds, are a federally protected species. It is not legal to kill Canada geese or damage their eggs or nests without prior written permission."

Several other sources turn up in quick searches, but I figure since this is from a State gov't and the most recent of the handful I looked at, I'd go with that one. It also appears to be protected in Canada and the UK.

They were probably getting ready to hibernate for the winter. Note that a couple of them were pretty sedate. Not that I'd like them doing it in my garage, though. Also not a job I'd like to have, professional rattlesnake remover.

Arathain - yes, your story explains why farm kids are mean - they have to be! I remember going to visit some friends on a chicken farm in Arkansas when I was a kid. They sent us out to the coop (thing was about 100 feet long, filled with chickens and chicken ****) to get some farm-fresh eggs. I agree about fowl smelling blood or fear - I must have been a bit tentative as I went for my first one, and the **** thing went for the eyes. Just missed pecking me in my right eye, scared the crap out of me. I think I was about 6 or so at the time. But, yeah, great story.

We get rattlesnakes out here in the mountains. Used to run across them periodically while mountain biking, frequently at dusk as they were coming out to hunt.

I give you my permission to kill them.

There, he has permission, and the government can go whack off in a corner - but not any corner I own.

I have those blue capped snakeshot in 9mm. Paid like 12 bucks for 10 of em.

This is a repost from some 6+ months ago, but a section is extremely on-topic!

-

Back to snakes, I used to spend a ton of time out in the woods here in eastern PA. To my knowledge I've only ever came across a rattlesnake on one occasion... or at least, there was only one occasion we heard its warning. We weren't going out of our way to look for them or anything.

...it's quite an interesting experience just walking along in the woods, and suddenly from 10 feet off to your right you hear a rattlesnake. :p

Copperheads seem to be a lot more common around here, but perhaps that's just because they seem to be more confrontational/less afraid of humans. Mean buggers, them.

All sorts of other kinds of snakes around here, though. Ringnecks and garter snakes are all over. Most years has one living under the sidewalk here...

That will be handy for dealing with those massive infestations of Philadelphia rattlers.
