Heard this on the radio so had to look it up. I think it's really unfair to ISP's like Comcast that spends millions setting up fiber-optic lines and routing networks. It's not right for a large company like Netflix to piggy-back on the ISP's for free and provide almost the same television service. Net neutrality should only go so far. If the ISP's don't make enough money, then our Internet connection speeds will stop growing.

Netflix pays for the bandwidth they use streaming video out. They pay for licenses to stream tv shows and movies. They're not piggybacking anything for free.

I pay a monthly rate to Comcast to be able to send and receive bits on the internet. Whether those bits come from Netflix, Blizzard, Yahoo, Google, or the Glade Rebooted is no business of Comcast's. And I pay a lot more to Comcast every month than I do to Netflix.

I bet the end result will just be Comcast charging more for Internet and less for TV.

It's actually the market + government at work. I'm just wondering if the government enforcing strong Net Neutrality is the right idea.

I'm not really sure. But Cox would set up more cables and we could watch higher resolution videos online. It's also in their best interests not to destroy the Internet by controlling it too much. If Comcast charged them too much, Youtube would suffer, which leads to Comcast suffering as well.

I'll use the PA Turnpike as an example. It's a private road. The State Police can tell you to get off the road and not come back on it. So if they decided to make a flat rate for all vehicles it's their business. I'd suspect that we would see less casual traffic and more commercial vehicles assuming the rate would be lower then for commercial and higher for passenger cars.


Absolutly. A cable modem has a lot more costs associated with it vs a dial up modem.

No, Level 3 (not Netflix) shouldn't have to pay. In fact I think it would be hilarious if they told Comcast to go screw themselves and see how their customers feel about it.

I full support Comcasts right to ASK level 3 for more money, but I also don't think level3 should give it to them. Comcast is terminating that traffic on paying customers end points, not transiting it.

More importantly, I'll be voting (against comcast) with my wallet an finding a different ISP. I've been wanting to tell them to take a hike for a long time. Now I'm just a lot more highly motivated to do it.

Comcast (XFinity) advertises that you can use their Internet service to stream TV, Videos, etc...

I find it kind of ironic that they are charging their customers for the ability to do this, and also charging the providers for the 'right' to do it. More power to them if they can get away with it, but I won't be contributing to their shenanigans.

I am still hoping Comcast suffers a massive case of can't stop crapping.

Wrong. If Level3 didn't have to pay, they wouldn't. The fact that they are doing so suggests that the contract between Netflix and Level3 guarantees reachability into Comcast (probably among others).

Yes, I work for them, and I spend a lot of time in their ivory tower downtown. Btw anyone ***** about your rates- blame your local gov. They use the franchise fees like an atm. Raise it on Comcast, and they get it out of you.
