I miss my old 969... but I think I've come up with a simple flowchart for protection in Cataclysm.

Start with Avenger's Shield
Judge before they reach you

If you get Sacred Duty, and Divine Plea is available, do Divine Plea and then Shield of the Righteous
After that, work through Holy Power building and mana dumping (consecrate, holy wrath) until you can judge again
If you get Sacred Duty, unless you'd otherwise die, use Shield of the Righteous to dump holy power

If you get Sacred Duty and Divine Plea is down, do Crusader Strike or Hammer of the Righteous to get Holy Power
Use Word of Glory to self bubble and holy shield and then ramp to 3 holy power and Shield of the Righteous
Don't judge until your Sacred Duty has expired or been used to try to maximize # of Sacred Duties.

If you fail to get Sacred Duty, you can still HP skill -> Word of Glory -> HP skill -> Consecrate or Holy Wrath -> HP skill -> Judge -> HP skill -> Shield of the Righteous.

This doesn't count in Divine Protection or Argent Defender or Avenging Wrath but it's a start of adjusting to the rotation and Cata changes.

I'm thinking with Cata that Inquisition will replace Word of Glory or Shield of the Righteous for 3 HP non-Sacred Duty moments, but I don't know how well that will work.

Thoughts? Feedback? Any protadins doing something radically different?

My rotation has changed to that of a priority queue similar to ret had been.(May still be, haven't invested time into ret since the changes.) However, I can take no credit for it. I've followed the suggested rotation/queue offered on Elitist Jerks with very nice results since the changes.

Quote:
The ability priority for single target tanking is as follows:

Shield of the Righteous > Hammer of the Righteous/Crusader's Strike > Hammer of Wrath (when active) > Judgement > Avenger's Shield* > Consecration > Holy Wrath

NOTE: SotR / Shield of the Righteous will not activate until you have at least one charge of Holy Power.

For area tanking the following priorities are used (this is a proposed priority queue for now):

Shield of the Righteous > Hammer of the Righteous > Consecration > Holy Wrath > Avenger's Shield* > Judgment

* This is assumed AS has been glyphed for single target. For the AoE rotation the assumption is AS is unglyphed.

I lined the abilities up on my bars and punch whatever is off cool down closest do the left. Adjusting for the occasional irregularity that will come up when something needs to be changed. Has worked quite well for my needs.

I researched the new prot playstyle at Maintankadin:
Quote:
Q: What's our single-target rotation?
A: 939 You hit CS every second GCD. That's the 3's slot. The "9s" slot goes:
   1. Judge
   2. Alternate AS/Holy Wrath
   3. Holy Power is at 3, hit ShoR

Q: What's our AoE rotation?
A: HotR, and whatever AE is off CD
A: Complicated when we get Inquisition at 81.
A: The best use of Grand Crusader procs...

I've taken to two rotations:

Crusader Strike to 3, prioritize Judgment, AS, and Holy Wrath, then Shield if I'm being threat-tailed or Sacred Duty is up and I'm not in fear for my life, or Word of Glory if I'm in fear for my life/Comfy lead and no Duty. That's single-target, mind.

For AE, I Hammer to 3, with Consecrate/Wrath/AS as fillers (Judge when necessary), and attempt to use WoG as an AE threat skill, instead of Shield (unless primary target needs more threat).

Not raided yet, though, as paladin.

So with the new class combos, I've created a Tauren Paly and have started leveling him up. This is my 4th tank. I have each of the other tanking classes (Warrior, DK and Druid) at lvl 80 with ICC gear.

I have to say that tanking as a Paly is hands down the most stupidly boring and easy thing that I've experienced in the game.

Ret however is kinda fun.

It's a little out-of-date given the changes to paladin spells and talents, but that was a "faceroll UI".
1) Bind one half of your keyboard to 'Consecrate'
2) Bind the other half of your keyboard to 'Holy Shield'
3) Roll your face back and forth on the keyboard
4) Profit

Ah, LOL. Yeah, that's about it. Seriously I will never, ever listen to a paly who says that tanking is hard ever again. The only possible "hard" part is gear selection and maybe making sure that you're actually facing the mob.

Single-target, I agree. The hard part is catching adds before they find your squishies, and making sure you taunt back all the mobs your high-DPSers rip away from you when they focus fire on something other than your immediate target. It's like herding cats and I'm just not very good at it.

Tab target is your friend.

But even there, I haven't seen where I have many problems at the lower levels so far. Shield, Holy Wrath, Concecrate. Then just tab target around as needed.

One thing tho that really helps know which mobs aren't targeted on you immediately is Tidy Plates - Threat Plates. Hands down the greatest tank add-on ever.

Tab target lags and often winds up with the wrong target, in my experience. And just because it's easy at level 30 doesn't mean it's going to be easy at level 80.

Keep it in your pants till you get married. Barring that put a fresh one in your wallet every couple of months whether you need it or not. Better safe than sorry.

If you're tanking a bunch of mobs, it's pretty rare there is a "wrong target", the point is that you're just hitting on a different target regularly so spreading your aggro around. Typically by regularly tab targeting right from the start, you won't lose aggro on any mob. Obviously if one peels off, then you need to specifically target that one to taunt it, etc.
