Fascinating read. I never realized you could abuse Google Pagerank like that. It reminds me of the quote, "All publicity is good publicity".

That was an interesting read. The guy's a first rate douchebag and I suspect his "success" will be shortlived.

I suspect that he may be shortlived after that article. As the article points out, his home address is on the web page, and everyone who reads the NYT (which we assume includes a lot of New Yorkers...) now knows that he's got at least half a million in merchandise warehoused there. That's pretty much asking for a home invasion. I'm not sure that was entirely responsible journalism.

I think this happens if you read too many nytimes articles. Delete your cookies or use a new browser.

And people wonder why I'm so reluntant to shop online, even for a tech person.

Shopping online is no more dangerous in practice than giving a server your credit card in a restaurant and, more often than not, more secure.

It's unfortunate that people are getting scammed by this guy, but do your homework first. Sometimes looking up consumer reviews or comments is the only way to tell if you're dining in a 5-star or a hole in the wall, so to speak.

Stories like this always make me reflect on how amazing/ridiculous it is that there aren't more effective anti-harassment laws. The behavior described in that article should be an obvious and clear-cut criminal matter.

Bingo. Don't buy from somewhere/someone you've never heard of and if a deal sounds too good to be true don't click buy.

Im positive that the consumer protection laws are adequate to protect consumers. As was demonstrated by the article, the people who need to escalate it failed, which would thwart any amount of laws that would get piled up. As to harrassment, i know NYC has extensive anti-harrassment laws. You can be cited for al?ost mundane behavior if a person "feels" threatened. Check out their anti stalking laws. Nice and vague on some points.

Simply put, a market correction is in order. To his kneecaps. Videotaped and posted online. Oh and buyer beware should always be the mindset of any shopping. Too good to be true usually is. Thats why Amazon does well- self policing. They dont need more regulations imposed to take care of their business, they do it themselves.

It strikes me, based on the article, that the guy himself is fairly average and not hard to get along with outside of the business sphere. But once you start tangoing with him at his job, he becomes a douche.

Also, yeah, some of the powers that be are not exactly owning up to their share of obligation. Shady business practices are one thing, but stalking and threatening your customers is criminal. Period.

It's apparently good business to piss people off enough that they start writing about you all over the web.

It might be a good short-term business strategy, but something tells his eyeglass business won't be around long the way things are going for him.

Of course once this business has been run into the ground, he can just start a new venture, using an assumed name (or a friends name) and apply the same shady tactics.

Not only that, but I'm sure this will inspire copy-cats...

I give him props for thinking out side... umm.. of the hexagon.
