I actually think it's going to be pretty decent. Based on the articles I've read, the folks creating it have understood what was special about the first movie and are actively working on recapuring and updating some of that in the new one. If nothing else, it's going to be amazingly pretty to watch.

It's funny, I don't really go to first-run movies much anymore, except for kids' movies, so, I wasn't aware that this hasn't even come out yet. I swear, I thought it had come and gone already, given the ubiquitousness of the ads and promos for it.

Tron Legacy soundtrack on amazon download for 3.99 today. If you're a daft punk fan, it's a must purchase. Very orchestral, very few lyrics in comparison to their other works, but EPIC.

I've been a Tron fan since I was a wee youngster. Very much looking forward to seeing this one. My wife hasn't seen the original though and I'm debating on whether she needs to see it first. I heard this is supposed to be OK to see as a stand alone movie.. anyone else heard similar?

Since it's been a whole generation since the last movie, I'm sure they're expecting for the target audience for this movie to have never seen (or really even have heard) of the original. It's absolutely amazing to me how many people have told me "I've never seen the original, should I see it before I see the new one?" I thought everyone saw that movie back in the day! :)

I'm sure you don't need to have seen the original, but it will probably still add context, since this is supposed to be a direct sequel. Also, you can compare real young Jeff Bridges with CGI young Jeff Bridges. :)

Phe and I both have a passing interest in seeing this, but as neither of us have seen the original Tron, and in Disney's infinite wisdom, they've let the DVD go out of print and aren't releasing a new version to capitalize on the release of the sequel...yeah. Not offering me the chance to give you money just succeeded in not getting me to give you even more money. Way to drop the ball, Dis.

Disney isn't re-releasing Tron because they did a test screening earlier in the year to see how people would react to seeing the original movie again. Apparently, a lot of people were laughing in the movie theater because of the dated special effects and costumes and stuff. So they chickened out because they were worried that if a bunch of people rewatched Tron, it would turn them off the franchise and hurt ticket sales for Tron Legacy.

Personally I'm rather sad they decided this, because I was really looking forward to buying Tron on BD.

Yeah, the nostalgia factor is high on the original Tron. If you saw it as a kid, it holds up well. If you watch it as a CG movie and attempt to hold it to todays standards, it just falls apart. Still a good movie, but I know how most of today's movie-going teens would react.

This. I watched it recently, and it just wasn't a good movie. It wasn't just special effects either, the whole thing was just nonsense.

"What if you got sucked into a computer??"
1982: "That's AWESOME."
2010: "That's retarded."

Computers were "fantastic" to a lot of folks in '82. It was an interesting idea. Now, it's just pretty silly.

Don't get me wrong, I have such fond memories of the original movie that I will see the sequel. But, I don't have high hopes.

TRON also relies on a lot of arcade gaming memes that just don't have any point of reference for the new generation. A teen today would be all like "why to their motorcycles leave walls behind them?"

Except from the previews, they do this in the new film as well. :)

What they SHOULD have done was remastered TRON1 with all the effects in the style of the new film. Then released a blu-ray that had both the remastered and untouched original on the same disc.

Man, the video game rocked, too. Thanks for reminding me of it. Controller was pretty flakey, though, never seemed to last through more then 10 rolls of quarters or whatever.

Nice idea, Dark.

Just returned from seeing it in 3D.

Very good with a lot of callbacks to the original, good acting, hokey script that was expected given it's a sequel of a Utopian ideal.

I think my favorite line has to do with the favorite author of Kora.

I won't go over the disappointments, which were few, though for the criticisms leveled, I'd counter that some of the video game meme still exist in different form.

Facebook has Snake, after all, and Snake is basically a single player light bike battle.

4 stars, maybe 3.5 if the rewatch value is lower than expected.

We watched the original movie, then went straight to the theater for the new one. We enjoyed it. Some of the lines were straight out of the first movie, in fact. So the plot wasn't the best in the world, but we thought it was entertaining.

This movie is hovering around 31% fresh at rotten tomatoes (a very low score). But this is a type of movie where I can't really go by what Average Joe Critic thinks. For me to determine whether or not I will like this movie based off of a review, I only have two questions.

1. Did you like Tron Legacy?
2. Did you like the original Tron?

If they answer both a "no" then their review is immediately disqualified to me.

Question...
Spoiler:
What happened to Tron at the end?
