Earlier today my power went out. No big deal, got plenty of time on the UPS for a safe shutdown, which I did.

Once the power restored, my PC wouldn't power up. No post, nothing, the fan on the power supply doesn't even spin. Thinking something went wrong with the power supply, I took a trip to Microcenter and bought a replacement. Installed it, same problem, same symptoms.

I'm thinking the motherboard died. Any other ideas?

If the fans won't even spin, it's either PSU, motherboard, or CPU.

So, yeah, motherboard's my next suggestion.

Possibly a silly question, but have you tried plugging it directly into the AC (i.e. removing the UPS from the equation)?

It seems more likely to me that the UPS was fouled up somehow by the power failure. Alternately, maybe the battery was substantially drained by the power failure, and now the battery won't take a charge. Most UPSes won't delivery any AC output if the battery charge is below a certain threshold.

Hmm. Good call, Stathol, since he mentioned he had time for a safe shutdown, I assumed Kairtane's monitor was plugged into the UPS, too, and would thus give away the UPS as a source of trouble.

sometimes the mobo will hold a charge that prevents it from booting. Try unplugging all power, resetting CMOS and then push the power button on the PC for 30 seconds (without the PC being plugged in)

Stathol and Kaffis,

The monitor is plugged into the UPS and was powered on. I swapped the PC power cable to that outlet, no change. Also, the monitor works when plugged into the outlet where the PC was. Also, everything else in the UPS is functional.

TheRiov,

I'll give that a try later. Right now, don't feel like fooling with it.

In the good news department, the HDD is good. Currently using it in a IDE to USB external setup. Using a spare work laptop and booting from USB FTW!

I've had that same scenario before and it was quite successful.
Usually just unplugging and holding down the power button for 60 seconds worked.

Whoah. You're booting a laptop from your old desktop HDD? I don't even want to think about the gymnastics Windows is trying to pull to get drivers straight...

What are these windows of which you speak? :D

I had to change my boot command from root=/dev/sda3 to root=/dev/sdb3 to get it to boot (sda is the first HDD sdb is the second). Other than that, X took care of installing the proper display and sound drivers.

Nope, didn't work this time. No biggie though, the new PC should be here Thursday. :D
