So I keep getting stuck behind someone on NetFlix for a series that I have been watching, Disc 1 will sit at the top of my queue for a month with a very long wait while Disc 2-4 will be ready (on-going for a few seasons of the show). Disc 1 comes and suddenly Disc 2 now has a very long wait and so on through the progression forcing me to wait a month or so between discs. I am tired of it and on the final season of the series so I jumped ahead and took Disc 3 before this jerk which means I have watched Disc 1, have a very long wait for Disc 2 and Disc 3 is sitting at home on a shelf. My question is after I watch Disc 3 how long should I let it sit around as punishment to this person who take a month to watch 3-4 episodes of a TV show? :D

Didn't it come out that Netflix schedules folks based on the inverse frequency that they order movies? So, if you order a ton of movies you start getting put in wait states?

Not sure if that applies to your situation...

I think there's a setting to prevent TV discs from being shipped out of order...

I'm inclined to believe its something along these lines. I'm sure they've got the whole system carefully tailored for maximum profit....profits wouldn't be great if you watched everything too quickly and they had to spend more money on shipping than they were taking in...thats why the instant queue is mostly crap. There are a few good things on there but most of the stuff you really want to watch you have to get on disc.

Interestingly enough, my husband was wanting to watch a series and SWEARS the second half was on instant and only the first half was on disc but by the time we got to the halfway point, the whole series was on disc.

I'm not sure how they rig things, but I'm fairly confident that they have some sort of system devised to keep you from ordering a gazillion things back to back.

On the other hand, we went through all of The Shield and most of the first season of The Wire and I've gotten everyone of them back 2 days after I shipped the previous one.

I wish they had more of the things I liked on instant but I can't complain right now.

Yes there is. If you want them in order you have to request them one at a time without any other of the series discs in your queue.

It's the same setting that prevents Gamefly from sending you the first disk in your Q

There is but I purposely requested Disc 3 so when I get Disc 2 I don't need to sit on my thumbs for a month while the ass-clown in front of me twiddles their twat.

I really don't think this is true, I've been with netflix for years, and I go through a ton of movies, mostly new releases, and I've never had a problem getting any of them the week they come out. I really think that was a rumor started by Netflix's competitors.

One thing that aggravates me right now is the studios that are playing favorites, letting certain rental companies have their movies a month early, or worse, only offering it for sale for the first month.

Yeah. For that matter why does it take first run movies months or years to come out on DVD anyway.

Because if they came out sooner, theaters would suffer.

Yeah, and theaters are already suffering enough already. I mean, they've had to lower the price on a gallon of popcorn to only 17 dollars! We're all tightening our belts here people! (Well, maybe they're just getting tighter naturally from eating a gallon of popcorn.)

DVDs are the reason that popcorn is as expensive as it is.

Possibly, but I also feel that one of the reasons renting movies(or even buying them) has gained so much popularity over the last 10 years is the outrageous ticket prices to begin with. I don't remember evening movies costing much under 6 dollars, which means for a family of 4 you're laying out 24 bucks before you buy a single soda or popcorn. I wouldn't think it was strange for a family of four to spend an average of 50 bucks for a single trip to the theater.

Definitely a reason we're seeing more PG-13 cuts of films targeted at the teenage market in the theater, and unrated cuts for the older market hitting DVD. Teenagers have more disposable income and are bad at math (hey, for only 4 dollars more I could OWN this crappy movie in a couple months).

I'm a huge fan of the collective film going experience, and I think for certain films it adds quite a bit to the enjoyment. I'll be going to see Tron: Legacy in the theater in 3-D, mainly because it looks like it's going to be a 200 million dollar effects spectacle with the most bare bones excuse for a story possible. However, maybe the old man growing in me just feels like there's so few movies worth spending the expensive premium to go to the theater.

It's not that they're bad at math, but they're impulsive and know they're going to get another allowance, anyway.

Yes, sure ... streaming FTW.
But physical media can only die out when EVERYTHING is streaming.
If I can't get it streaming, I *HAVE* to get the disc.

I agree. We're definitely not there yet. I just see it as a strong trend in this direction. It's only a matter of time before you can select any movie ever made to be played on your television (or media device).

Streaming is cool, but affords the opportunity you will lose access to the content you want.

Physical Media aren't my thing either, but downloading it and keeping it is good.
