For those who think telling kids about Santa is a lie, will you never let them read fiction like Cat in the Cat or Winnie the Poo?

Seems to me that with the role imagination has played in the development of the space program, modern technology, etc., folks would want to help their kids develop the ability to imagine fantastic things.

I'd rather have a kid with an active imagination than one without.

I'd have no problems with presenting Santa as fiction, like a Dr. Seuss story. The key word there is fiction, and from that viewpoint, my children have been told about Santa.

Well, I don't remember telling my kids there was no such little bear as Winnie ...

I don't think most people tell their kids that Winnie brings them presents, which would be an affirmation of his existence.

Children don't often assume stories we read them from books are true unless we tell them they are. Even a two year old knows animals can't really talk.

I'm all up for telling them santa is fictional, but also teach them that if they want presents they will have to act like they believe in him in front of other people. Hey if the are gonna learn to act to fit in, might as well start them early =P

I plan on raising my first without Capitalist Christmas.

Why does it matter to you if people tell their kids about Santa or not? Who died and made you king and judge of everyone and what is right? If parents want to let their children believe in Santa, that is up to them. It doesn't affect you at all. If it causes them to grow up uneducated then you will be further ahead because you didn't believe and now you won't have to step on them on your way to the top.

It matters to me because I'm judgemental. Also it betters my life in the long run if children are well-educated.

What makes you think that believing in Santa makes you uneducated? There is no proof to this. It takes far more than a belief in Santa to produce an uneducated child.

It shows the child doesn't understand basic geography. There is no land at the North pole, much less towns or cities. Even if there was land, it wouldn't be a habitable area. The child has no basic temporal understanding... Santa can't travel or teleport to houses. It shows a lack of common sense to think a man jumps down innumerable chimneys without getting arrested, injured, or killed. Reindeer can't fly. Sleighs can't fly, and certainly can't hold more than a dozen presents. An educated person has none of these misunderstandings... he or she would know the myth of Santa Claus, but understand that it isn't real.

So, at age 2-3 a child should know these things or this proves they will be uneducated the rest of their life?

No. Even high school drop-outs can become educated eventually.

So, what harm is there in letting some parents alllow their children to believe in Santa?

It will not produce uneducated children, as you just acknowledged, so you will not have to worry about not having a better life.

So, it really doesn't matter..Does it?.... it all comes down to some parents want their children to be children and have a magical belief that creates happiness and some believe differently. That's all it is..

It makes it take longer for them to catch up to reality. Also it's lying to them and could potentially damage a relationship, or invite future lying.

How long do you think it delays them? Seems to me, you believe one minute then something happens to stop the belief and you believe no more. A matter of minutes and the reality is there and they know. We are not talking years of delay or harm to a child.
