Kirra:

The title of the thread is when should you tell your about Santa, not when should other people tell their kids about Santa.

Rynar: I am aware of the title of the thread. Thank you for pointing it out to me though. I don't have children yet, so I am just trying to understand what Lex's reason is for being upset that other people allow their children to believe in Santa. His argument doesn't make sense to me, is all.

I wasn't aware that the title of the thread meant it to be directed only at Parents.

I also don't think I was saying when parents should tell their children, my point is, that it's up to them. If Taly doesn't celibrate Christmas and chooses to tell her kids that Santa is fiction, that's her business. Nitefox chooses to celebrate Christmas and his kids believe in Santa, that also is his business. But when it's said that this belief makes a child uneducated, I am just stating, I disagree, and I was trying to understand Why Lex thinks it does.

I'd say there's no hard and fast rule on exactly what age a kid should be told the truth about Santa. There's far too many factors involved, so it's more a matter of feel. If the kid's really enjoying the whole shebang, let them believe...but if they express doubt, maybe its time. But you still have to initiate them into The Great Santa Conspiracy so that they don't ruin the fun of others who still believe.

Lex, you don't seem to value imagination as much as, say, an artist. That's fine, free country and all that...but frankly, the ideal world you seem to want sounds to me like something dreamed up at a meeting of IBM engineers with nannystate tendencies. To each his own, but I'll take a world with a little more color and wonder to it, personally.

My daughters believe in Santa, and fire-breathing dragons, wicked step-mothers, prince charming, and fairies...when they're playing and suspending disbelief. The only fantasy in that list that I will disabuse them of is prince charming, as for the rest, they can continue to believe and disbelieve as they choose. I'll be damned if the real world, and everything that is in it is going to be thrust upon them when they have no need of it, much less take away those things that inspire wonder and laughter just because they aren't. Neither of them has difficulty discerning fantasy from reality, and they don't even need meds to do it.

Then "an educated person" would be wrong. It's a terrible thing when "an educated person" is less informed than a 2.5 year old, yet chooses to expound upon things of which they're ignorant. My youngest daughter knows that a sleigh can hold far more than "a dozen presents", she's been in one that could hold that many people.

Lexy, two questions.

1. Do you consider yourself uneducated?

2. How were you brought up, with regards to Santa's existence?

I consider myself quite intelligent, and for that matter, many of the Gladers to be also. I was brought up believing in Santa, and I would venture that there may be more than a few of our educated Glade brethren who also believed in the same.

I don't see how believing in Santa somehow will dumbify (this really should be a word) a child. I remember quite fondly coming to the realization that Santa wasn't real by recognizing the handwriting on the letter I left to Santa with cookies and milk as my mother's. I enjoyed knowing the truth and having my 3 year younger brother still "knowing" that there was a Santa.

Yeah, trust me, I know. Thanks for the warning, though. 8-)

I'm constantly reminded of the stark contrast between the quality of Locz's posts and Lex's posts.

I don't know ... I'm actually finding this whole exchange pretty funny.

Show your work. If this is statistically true, you should be able to show where you got this info.

You really want proof that blatantly lying to your children can cause trust issues, Arathain?

I think it was your statement that the trust issues 'started' with the Santa Claus thing.

I can honestly say I've never heard of that happening. I'd be curious where you are getting that from (I suspect your vivid imagination, but feel free to prove me wrong).

What's the first lie most kids remember being told? Especially from generally honest parents.

I am really, really surprised that this thread hasn't heard from Elmo.
