If it's between those two, go Epic.

Seems better on paper, really. The screen is .3 smaller but it's SAMOLED. They both run Android, but I think the Epic is a little beefier under the hood. Add a physical keyboard and it sounds like a pretty nice package.

I do feel like they've both been out a while though and would be leery of new hardware announcements soon. I do know there's going to be a dual core android phone launching in Korea around the corner.

I found myself in such a dilemma a few weeks ago when I dropped my iPhone 4 for an HTC HD7.

Personally, I've been doing a bunch of research (going to get a new phone shortly) and my current frontrunner is the Evo. I am trying to transition to a phone without a physical keyboard, and it's running android 2.2 already (looks like the epic is still on 2.1).

I am hoping for some new hardware announcements before I have to purchase (for work), but it's not looking good. Wish the new Galaxy S wasn't only on t-mobile. :)

Drop Sprint and run like hell away from their evil network?

I don't see the option for that, though.

I was at that choice too, ultimately I ended up going with the EVO, even though I do miss the physical keyboard Swype makes touchscreen acceptable, I like the slightly larger screen, HTC sense is a much nicer custom UI than Samsung's Touchwiz, sense adds actual features and looks nice, Touchwiz just makes your interface look somewhat like an iPhone's interface for the most, if I wanted an iPhone looking interface I would have gotten an iPhone.

The EVO has HDMI out which is nice, the Epic unless they have finally fixed it has GPS locking issues, the kickstand is nice so watching videos without having to hold the phone, and HTC seems to be the quickest to push out updates for their phones, the first two phones that officially has 2.2 in the US were both HTC made phones, the Nexus one and the EVO, don't think Samsung has still even officially pushed the 2.2 update to all Epic users yet, just a small select test batch.

In the Boston area at least between the 3 carriers I've been on, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile Sprint has by far has the best service, not even comparable, and I know I frequently have have 4G signal when my best friend who's on Verizon has 0-1 bars of 3G.

That's also why I'm going with sprint, they're the only 4G carrier in my area (currently).

In my area I never drop Sprint. I ran their GPS all the way from Cleveland to the OBX and the only places I lost coverage were in the mountains in PA.

I don't know much about the hardware involved other than the marketing spiel, and touch/feel are mostly subjective. Read up on the reviews and see if there are any known (unresolved) glitches you'll have to deal with.

Otherwise, everything else being equal, having Andriod 2.2 is a pretty big deal (to me).

I see that one of the phones you listed above is made by HTC, and the other isn't. Coming from my (admittedly anecdotal) experience, I therefore recommend you get the one that's not made by HTC.

You're welcome.

Go Evo and then immediately flash the Ultimate Droid ROM onto it. The stock ROM sucks so hard. I've been rocking Ultimate Droid for the last few months and it's made my phone so much better.

If you get a phone that you can flash custom ROM's onto, 2.2 doesn't matter because you can get whatever is in 2.2 that you really need.

I don't remember if I discussed this with you before, Farskee, but did I ever get around to figuring out whether your hate for HTC was actually directed at HTC, or merely misplaced Windows Mobile hate?

I think half and half. I hated hated hated WinMo (whatever iteration was on there...6, I guess?), but the hardware itself was so buggy, sluggish, and generally unresponsive as to cause fits of rage.

I'm sure the two working in tandem was the most likely culprit, but still. It's rare that I swear off an entire brand due to one bad experience. That's how bad than one experience was.

Windows Mobile 6 was like that on everything, Farsky. Next time you're phone shopping, give HTC another chance in the store.

Ooh, wait! I think it was WinMo 5, based on these Wiki screenshots.

Weren't windows mobile reviews (for just about every version) pretty awful? I'd say that's shooting yourself in the foot, regardless of hardware.

Why the **** can't my phone just call people I want to call and receive calls I want to receive?

I far prefer my WP7 device to my unloved iPhone 4 sitting on my desk at home.
