Telling children about Santa isn't lying. It's make-believe. Small children do not fully understand the difference between fantasy and reality; reading them any sort of fictional story could be construed as lying if we go with your idiotic ideas.

But then, we should keep in mind you're really not doing anything except trying to antagonize people anyhow. I doubt very much that you actually give two shits about this issue beyond the stir it's created here.

I love Christmas :) but I do hate the commercialism, the stores start putting things out almost after Halloween now, and Black Friday is just a joke. People stand in line for hours for the same "deal" the stores offer a few days later, let alone the fact it's only a few dollars cheaper than it normally would be.

How many people died this year? I don't keep up with the news anymore.

Even in the unlikely event it was less than 1%, such a small fraction would still be millions of people. That's certainly "A LOT."

There's no way it's even that high.

I guess we shouldn't bother teaching kids science until they are ready to hear the truth about Santa, or perhaps have parental permission forms for kids to be taught science. As long as children believe Santa brings them presents, they have an extremely weak understanding of science (and criminal law). One of the first lessons should be explaining how it's impossible.

Why? My knowledge of science is what made me declare shenanigans about Santa.

This is like saying it's ok for children to skip half their classes because they can figure stuff out on their own.

No, it's actually like saying the opposite of that. If the kids go to their classes, i.e. learn about science, THEN they can figure things out on their own.

In fact, I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how you got "no need to go to class" from my disagreement with you saying "we shouldn't bother teaching kids about science".

It's nowhere near "less than 1%?" Wow. You appear to be stating that negative numbers of people felt betrayed by their parents when they found out Santa wasn't real. I suspect it's more like 1/20 - 1/50, but you're saying even the 1/1000 (the figure I used conservatively to come up with "millions") is way too high.

1% is 1/100. And yes, I am quite confident that far, far less than 1 in 100 children have been injured in any way by the story of Santa claus. I'd say it's much closer to 0%. But hey, if you can back up your numbers, have at it.

And I suspect, though I cannot demonstrate this, that a higher percentage have benefitted from the story, through increased imagination, fond childhood memories, etc.

1% would have been 10s of millions. I gave the conservative example of "less than 1%."

And children not told the Santa Claus lie have no other or different options provided for excersizing imagination, nor are they likely to have fond childhood memories, then?

It's not conservative just because you say it is. A "conservative estimate" is an estimate that is so obviously true, it can be supported without data. This is not.

And kids with trust issues who were lied to about Santa weren't lied to about anything else or abused in any other way?

Now... here is a flipside question...

How many kids, when told the truth about Santa, already knew and were just letting their parents think that the kids believed?

We actually just officially told our youngest this year.

But an hour after we told her... she came and told me she has known for a few years, but her mom and I just got so into it, it was fun to just let us go.

My eldest has so much fun buying presents for her brothers and sisters and saying they are from Santa.. that way the kids get confused when Lisa and I do not know what the present is... SHE is the cruel one.

I'd say that is extremely common.
