Refinancing the house, got a good rate locked in. Problem? Bank wants my shitty garage taken down before they put it through and I'm on a deadline to hold the rate which has since climbed up over a point. Although it's annoying, this is generally fine because it was on my short list to take care of anyway.

New problem: Town wants me to now jump through 80 **** million hoops to knock down this dilapidated old garage that's close to falling on it's own anyway. I'm improving the value of the land I supposedly own but in actuality rent, and they're giving me ****. Letters from the gas, phone, and water company saying it's ok. Letters from my neighbors. Check for asbestos and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting. Get all that and we'll give you the permit in 10-20 business days. God only **** knows what they'll ask to put up a new one.

Go **** yourselves. Seriously. And if I dont comply I'm sure they'll hit me with fines and everything else. I'm pretty sure it's going to conveniently fall down on it's own.

Well, now you know that it's got to "fall down on its own" before you even deal with the local power mongers, eh?

Yep I'm a fool for thinking I should "do the right thing". It's coming down and let them prove it didnt fall on it's own.

It sucks that they force us into situations like this.

Ignore them, they have no authority to dictate to you what you do with your property.

Never ever ask government for anything, just do what you do. Then sue them if they say anything.

If they do manage to fine you, is it likely to cost more than you'll save with the lower interest rate? If the answer is no, then **** it -- tear it down now and beg for forgiveness later.

No they do not have any authority to do so Arathain, you clearly do not understand the concept of property.

Yes sue. At worst you remedy the situation, at best you get a dose of exactly how much a slave they want you to be.

Apparently reality to you is the little bubble of what you want the world to be projected around you.

LOL man.

Government has passed any number of laws placing restrictions on property. These have held up in court. This gives them the authority. THAT is reality. You're the one living in the fantasy.

No, that gives them power and the illusion of authority to, well, to people like you.

is the Garage Structurally unsound? Was the garage there when you moved in? did it pass inspection at that time? if so tell the City to **** off. a structure only has to meet the building codes that were in place when it was built. The only thing they can ***** about is if it's a blight, and most blighted structures can be dealt with by a coat of paint. If that's to much hassle then have the wife accidentally backup into the support with her car and call the insurance company and have them build you a new one.
After all it's Christmas People have to back in to unload the gifts and food for the festivities.

Really? Why resort to fraud? Really doesn't seem to be consistant with honoring The Lord Our Savior on Christmas. Just sayin'.

It is very plain to see after all of these years that your reality is in only very limited ways similar to mine.

I still find your view of land rights somewhat amusing Elmarnieh. You purchased the land at some point, and it has changed hands many times in the last 100-500 years, but your concept of ownership is still based on some guy marking out territory and claiming as their own something that was at one point unowned at all. It was theirs because someone arbitrarily said "This is mine" or "This is yours"

Pretty easily explained in Locke's Second Treatise. If a person takes a natural resources and works it to change it for human use - its now their property.

Take unclaimed land, work it to build a house - the area you cleared for the building materials and that house are now your property. Work further the materials, hunting and gathering and your claim extends farther.

You know where you said "but your concept of ownership is still based on some guy marking out territory and claiming as their own" - before that it is unclaimed.

So wouldn't the land have original belonged to aboriginal people, not 'unclaimed'

Garage is down and out. No local government involved. As for putting up a new one, I'm told that it will only be a problem if some neighbor turns me in as it's being built. That's unlikely but possible. If I do get caught ... and I hate to think of the fact that I need to fear getting "caught" by anyone doing something on my own damn property... they can make me take it down.

Of course, doing "the right thing" entails basically paying the town $$$ for permits.

This is really very simple.

You claim they have authority, much in the same way someone having a gun against your head has "authority", i.e. we have the power to enforce rules we create.

He claims they have no legitimate authority based on a moral viewpoint, not a legal one. It is a valid point. Even if you disagree with the morality, you can recognize why someone else may feel that way.

I'm sure you understand this. This place is as pedantic as it has ever been.

Interesting. I don't see anywhere Elmo is stating "I feel" which would indicate a moral position, instead he seems to be asserting that they have no legal right to stop you from doing whatever the hell you want.

I can certainly empathize with a moral argument that the government has too much authority but that doesn't change the fact that they have that legal hold over me.

Elmo: Chaotic Good
Arathain: Lawful Good.
