Thanks for the replies. Sounds like 3.5 is what I am looking for. I should be able to find used copies cheap. Plus I want to use eberron setting

If you have any Eberron lore questions, ask away. I ran an eberron game for YEARS, and I know the lore pretty damned well inside and out

Eberron has some very cool ideas. It's about as steampunk as D & D should get without building a completely different system.

Eternal Wands - why not have a 2/day wand of Cure Light Wounds (bard spell) for about the cost of a potion of cure moderate wounds?

Warforged - create a golem race, given how many times you can fight a golem as a minion, and give it drawbacks to healing so it's not that out of balance.

Most magic items are powered by mystically charged crystals... ok, sort of Burning Crusade if you overdo the crystal motif, but it allows for trains and other steampunk themed items without science or advanced engineering.

Like I said, good ideas, and I'd be interested in Rich Burlew's runner up to it, but I'm thinking of trying an Eberron to Pathfinder game one day.

Eberron and Warforged were the worst things to happen to DnD before 4th edition. 4th edition is only slightly worse.

Only marginally on topic, have I mentioned I love the fixed dragons stats in 4e? The game we just started at work a few weeks ago very nearly resulted in a TPK fighting a level 4 young black dragon, when he did 40 damage to the ranger and 22 damage to everyone else in a single round. :)

The fight ended with everyone on the ground except the avenger who was under 10 hp.

Black dragons are just nasty, never had a good encounter with one, no matter the rule set.

Exalted is horrible. Scion, on the other hand...
Both systems have gaping mechanical flaws, although Scion is worse by far in that regard. The automatic successes are really cool bonuses around character generation, but they get game-breaking very fast. By Demigod, someone in your group is able to throw 7-16 automatic successes at any given problem. It fits with the core theme of the game (you're the children of gods) but the actual game mechanics are atrocious.

As Taly mentioned, the artwork in the Exalted books are what puts people off. The world itself is an amalgamation of Indian and Chinese mythology rather than anime. Although without the art style they chose, White Wolf probably never would have had as much success with the product.

Mechanics are secondary for me. Exalted is not a fun game world. Scion is.
