Thank God for Netflix! I LOVE this series!

Glad you're enjoying it. Key me know when you finish it, I'll commiserate with you because it was cut too short by a boneheaded network executive's vacuous wife.

Yup, I actually finished re-watching the series again yesterday. Still makes me so angry that something so amazing could get cancelled 12 episodes in.

P.S. Just finished watching Serenity (again). I finally figured out what bugs me about it. It's so frantic. Joss knew he had to tell a story to an entirely new set of viewers, and wrap up as much of the show's loose ends as possible. While he did a great job, the original show had this very strong western pace to it, it took it's time to get you where it was going. The film just blazes past, losing a lot of the western flavor from the show simply due to the necessary pace. I'm not saying it's worse or better, but I think that's why it FEELS so different.

Now she will understand why we say Gorram a lot around here.

Welcome, Browncoat.

Now you need to take this a step further and start on more Joss Whedon shows. I suggest you join Darksiege in discovering Buffy. :)

Firefly was prety darn good. To be honest, after first viewing of the series I didn't think it was all that special. 2nd and 3rd viewings of the series have been much better, although I can't really pinpoint why. I both love and am annoyed by the characters (Mal especially). The dialogue is the same, its both awesome and irritating. The stroylines aren't really all that unique either. But in the end, it was a special series and I'm quite sad it didn't get more than one season to gain some steam and really explore its possibilities. The episode with the bounty hunter or whatever was my favourite by far though.

Welcome to years ago. ;) I don't really get the Joss shrines, but Firefly is good.

Oh, God... No she doesn't.

Firefly is one of the two best shows I've ever seen, but I can't stand anything else he has done.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is by far my favorite show he's done. Firefly would probably have eclipsed it had it lasted long enough. Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog and Angel rank right up there, too.

Dollhouse was merely "okay," and didn't make me a big fan in the end.

This is basically a movie. So you might as well include Serenity.

Serenity was the best movie I've seen in years.

Wait, what was this? Someone's wife? I thought it was just a boneheaded network exec. What's the story here?

The story is that the network exec called for Firefly to be cancelled because his wife didn't understand the show.

I can't find any source for this either. Although this quote did make me sad all over again:

Quote:
Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle felt that the melding of the western and science fiction genres was a "forced hodgepodge of two alarmingly opposite genres just for the sake of being different" and called the series a "vast disappointment". Emily Nussbaum of the New York Times, reviewing the DVD set, noted that the program featured "an oddball genre mix that might have doomed it from the beginning: it was a character-rich sci-fi western comedy-drama with existential underpinnings, a hard sell during a season dominated by Joe Millionaire."

This is why we can't have nice things!

Personally, I still believe it was cancelled because Fox refused to air the first episode, rushed Joss into making a second episode on an insanely tight schedule, aired the rest of the episodes out of order, pre-empted the show with sports events, and moved the show around on the schedule, all while airing only 11 of the 14 completed episodes.

Yeah, I don't understand why it didn't make it...

Yeah, I went looking, and didn't find anything. I swear that's what I read at some point (and if you read it on the Internet, it has to be true!) as insider rumor. It's the kind of thing that's unlikely to be confirmed officially, but I can't even track down the rumor at this date.

I suppose it's entirely possible that it was some sorrow-induced hallucination...

Of course if it was cancelled because the exec's husband didn't understand the show, it definitely wouldn't be true.

Sci-fi appeals to men much more than women. A lot of women don't get the appeal.
