The better question, Lex, is why would anyone use one? They're so inefficient it's not even funny.

Why because it's so hard to pay attention enough to line up your phone when putting it in the cradle of course

It's funny because the people who use those are waste a lot more electricity charging are probably the same ones that bought those silly eco power strips that turned off power completely so they didn't have to pay the extra 25 cents a year from the trickle draw their DVD player takes, which is even worse when you figure they cost a good $15 more than a comparable normal power strip, lol

If I got a wireless charger I'd probably keep it at work where our electricity use is flat-rate and rolled into our lease. Efficiency concern -> out the window.

Hmm. I avoid charging my phone in the car because it used to be that the relatively dodgy waveform from the car alternator would kill battery life over time. Is this less a concern with modern battery chemistry and chargers?

The charging systems in most modern devices minimize this.

I don't think I'd want to use the car as my sole source of charging and leave it plugged in for extended periods (just to be safe), but for my 20-30 minute commute, it won't result in anything bad happening.

My phone is my GPS, and I stream music from it to my car stereo. On a rare occasion i may enable WiFi or Bluetooth tethering for someones WiFi only device (Ipod touch, Ipad, eReader, etc..) to get an internet connection. I usually have it connected to a power source when I'm doing these things, just cuz....

True, but some people actually care about wasting electricity for reasons even beyond their monthly bill! I know, it's crazy.

Still, it doesn't matter, once we work out that limitless renewable non-polluting power source, right?

I like the wireless chargers just because Nikola Tesla doesn't get nearly enough credit for designing them 119 years ago.

The actual purpose of the wireless charger isn't to charge batteries, but to eliminate their usage entirely.

Not exactly sure the costs specifics, but in the neighborhood......
No land line=$0.00
2 AT&T cell phones (800? minutes/free weekends/nights, 200 text/month)= $80ish
DirecTv full package =$120 (you can get much cheaper plans)
AT&T 3.0 dsl= $19.95 (first 12 months, $34.95 after that)

If you can get U-verse in your area, that could replace cable TV, but not sure the price. You can package the stuff together also for a small savings.

I'd say go to AT&T and see what they have to offer. Check online also, because they have deals online that you won't get in a physical store (i.e. free dsl modem = $100 savings) Found this out the hard way, and cost me $100.......

Can you say that same thing with the eye roll after working for 15+ hours in a day and getting out of work at 06:00 hours? Under those circumstances... lining that little gorram charging unit with the connector on the phone is not easy.

I tried for 20 minutes and said "Screw it" and left the phone uncharged until I woke up.

Yes, heck I could say the same thing if I stumbled into the house at 6am drunk, it takes more nimbleness to unlock the door to your house to get inside that late in the first place.

Modern car 12VDC power is provided by the battery, not directly through the alternator. All the 12V accessories run this way. The battery acts as a UPS/Surge Suppressor. Only the ignition and essential accessories are power directly from the car.

Car batteries don't actually regulate the 12VDC line and it can vary drastically from as low as 8VDC to over 14VDC, however with a proper DC-DC regulator you're fine and run anything just fine, I have a windows PC built into my car with a power supply specifically designed for automotive use that accepts a 6-24VDC, virtually any device that has a 12V car adapter has the appropriate regulator built into it or into the adapter itself which would be the case of phone charger which already has to change the voltage from the car to 5VDC .
