Supposedly there's a huge group of people ready to run interference with the Westboro chodes when they come down to picket. I was planning on going to get in their face but now my ankle won't allow it. :(

Well there's that group of bikers who volunteer to work security for the soldiers' funerals that the Westboro Baptists would protest. Now, granted they started doing that because a lot of them were veterans themselves, but I would expect a lot of them to start showing up.

They'll be at the little girl's funeral, facing down Westboro.

It's an absolute freaking shame that this is even necessary...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/01 ... -funerals/

foxnews.com wrote:
Arizona residents are locking arms to stop the Westboro Baptist Church from disrupting the funerals for victims of Saturday's shooting in Tucson, with bikers and others organizing a massive counter-protest and state lawmakers fast-tracking a bill to hamstring the group.

The Kansas-based Westboro church is notorious for showing up at the funerals of dead soldiers and other high-profile gatherings wielding anti-gay signs.
But when the church announced it would picket the funeral Thursday for the 9-year-old girl fatally shot over the weekend at a Tucson grocery store by a gunman who allegedly killed five others and injured 14 others attending a town-hall session by Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Tucson- and Phoenix-area residents started organizing immediately.
They may not be able to stop them, but they plan on giving the grieving family as much of a buffer as possible between the protesters and the service.

"It makes me sick to my stomach," said Glen Littell, who's bringing a pack of bikers from the Phoenix Motorcycle Rider Group to Tucson on Thursday. "They're a stench from a slaughterhouse. We're just going to block the stench so the family can catch their breath."

Arizona state lawmakers approved emergency legislation that would order protesters to stay 300 feet away from the funeral. The bill passed unanimously in the House and the Senate and Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill into law Tuesday night.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, the lead sponsor on the bill, said in an e-mail to colleagues before the bill was passed that the plan was to protect the victims' families from the "hateful protest" from the Westboro Baptist Church.

She said she has the support of the Senate president and Gov. Jan Brewer, and the bill will go into effect "immediately" once it's signed.
"It's gonna happen," Sinema said. The senator said she was "real upset" after learning that the Westboro church planned on protesting but had a visceral reaction after reading their press release and sprung into action.

"It is the most disgusting thing I ever read in my entire life," she told FoxNews.com. "I literally threw up after I read it. … I'm like, 'I'm gonna fix this.'"
Littell said his riders are not looking for any violent confrontations. But he told FoxNews.com that Arizona bikers are going to do "whatever we have to do" to cordon off the family from the protests. A group called the Patriot Guard Riders often does this when the Westboro church pickets military funerals, but Littell said that group is not traveling to Tucson, so "we're stepping in."

"Our sole purpose will be to allow that family some dignity and respect … without having to worry about the a--holes," he said.
It's not clear whether the Westboro church intends to picket the funerals of all the victims of Saturday's attack. One press release from the group declared, "Thank God for the shooter," and said the group would picket the "funerals." Another release announced plans only for the protest on Thursday.

"God sent the shooter to deal with idolatrous America," the group said in a statement.
The Westboro church, led by Fred Phelps, believes that tragic events like the deaths of soldiers are punishment for tolerance of homosexuality.
The Supreme Court last fall heard arguments in a case brought against Phelps by the father of a soldier killed in Iraq whose funeral was protested by the group in 2006. The father, Albert Snyder, had won a multimillion-dollar verdict against the church, claiming invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The court is expected to issue a ruling soon on whether free speech can be curbed at specific locations and events.

Sinema said the bill she was introducing is modeled on an Ohio law that has withstood court challenge. It would technically apply to protesters at any Arizona funeral, though Sinema was clear that it's directed at Westboro.
She said she hopes the protesters and counter-protesters avoid any violence at the service. Meanwhile, several grassroots groups have popped up on Facebook calling on Tucson residents to intervene.
"We will create a wall of humanity to allow the families who've lost their love ones to hold their funerals in peace, held with dignity, and surrounded in love," one of the Facebook groups says in a statement.
Another calls for a "peaceful protest" of the church at the funeral Thursday for 9-year-old Christina Green.
Littell has notified the Pima County Sheriff's Department and has reached out to several other biker groups notifying them of their planned presence at Green's funeral. He crossed his fingers that the Hells Angels would join them.

"Nothing says stand back and be silent like a Hells Angels presence," he said.
Littell added that if the church moves on to picket other funerals, his riders will follow.
"We're getting word there's gonna be a pretty large presence of bikers," he said. "Word's spreading. And spreading quickly."

Arizona blocks funeral protests
Spoiler:
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed emergency legislation Tuesday establishing “funeral protection zones” to keep protesters away from the memorial services for the victims of Saturday’s shooting in Tucson.

Earlier in the day, the Arizona Legislature passed the bill unanimously.

The measure - aimed at the Rev. Fred Phelps and other members of the Westboro Baptist Church who announced plans to picket outside the Thursday funeral of 9-year-old victim Christina-Taylor Green - won bipartisan support. It will take effect immediately.

“Such despicable acts of emotional terrorism will not be tolerated in the State of Arizona. This legislation will assure that the victims of Saturday’s tragic shooting in Tucson will be laid to rest in peace with the full dignity and respect that they deserve,” the Republican governor said in a statement.

The law will establish a 300-foot perimeter around a funeral location beginning one hour before a service until one hour after a service.

“They want to protest at the grave site of a 9-year-old girl, and we want to stop him,” said state Sen. Paula Aboud (D-Tucson), referring to Phelps, who plans to picket outside Green’s funeral.

“I read Westboro’s press release and wanted to vomit I was so angry. It was sickening,” said state Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, a Phoenix Democrat and the bill’s primary sponsor. Sinema is a Tucson native and a friend of several of the shooting victims.

The church “has a national reputation for trying to denigrate funerals of people who have served this country bravely. When I found out they were coming to Arizona, I was like, ‘Oh no you’re not,’”

She added, “We can’t stop them from being hateful, but we can keep them away from people who are grieving.”

The legislation is based on an Ohio law, which recently survived a challenge in federal court from the Westboro group. Anyone found guilty of violating the Arizona law would face misdemeanor charges.

Information posted on the church’s website praises the gunman and says the killings were the result of God being angry because the country hasn’t repented its sins.

The Republican and Democratic parties in Pima County are asking people to gather Thursday to create a human barricade to protect Green’s family from protesters, The Arizona Republic reported.

Good. **** that. Although a better answer would be passing emergency legislation on allowing people to beat the **** out of funeral protesters from WBC

Not to be a stick in the mud, but isn't it illegal to craft a law specfically targeting a group of people like this?

Its not saying Westboro specifically cannot protest.

The law says all protestors must be 300 yards away.

More than slowly. Why not just make a law that they can only protest at certain times? How about you're not allowed to protest where 3 or more kids might see? Westboro is a problem but they are within their rights.

Is the cemetary public property? Why not have the landowner ask them to leave and nail em for defiant tresspass when they don't?

The WBC idiots will still be there, but they will be 1000 feet away from the cemetery on the procession route. Most likely, as usual, their group will be surrounded by motorcycle riders gunning their Harleys to drown out their loudspeakers.

Yeah - my work buddies and I were talking about that yesterday at lunch. We kinda figured it would be the kinda thing that would get overturned rather quickly for being unconstitutional. But it would have the immediate impact of preventing the WBC d-bags from fartknockery.

As I see it they are infringing on citizens right to peacefully assemble for the funeral. If you're going to prevent me from physically removing them myself, you need to keep them out of my face. This is not an assembly on any elected official, it's private citizens at a non political event. I'm not worried about any free assembly slippery slope.

The only reason the WBC does this is to get money. They toe the legal line VERY well. If they are harassed, or there's a perceived lack of protection from the police, or any permits to protest are denied, then they sue. And, since they are usually civil rights cases, the losers pay the attorney fees and court costs (IIRC) in addition to any settlements or judgments. Since the WBC members act as their own attorneys...

If they get no publicity, they pack up pretty quickly. But they are fishing for people to accost them - and if that happens, they pounce.

So their protests are less about any beliefs they may or may not actually hold than about getting the biggest bang for their buck with inflammatory language and signs, and who they target.

The Arizona legislation was drafted similarly to an Ohio law which has already survived a court challenge by the WBC. Although I haven't researched the Ohio decision, I think Dash is on to something...the people in the funeral party have a right to assemble to mourn without being disrupted. It's still illegal to deny the WBC to stage their "demonstration", but the law restricts where they can demonstrate, so that the funeral service can proceed uninterrupted.

I don't know, I might be inclined to craft legislation that bans them specifically from protesting anything in the state.

Let them take it to court, and in a quick 2 or 3 months, it would be thrown out as unconstitutional.

But - 2 to 3 months gets everyone peacefully buried.

This article is saying it's "almost certainly constitutional"

http://patterico.com/2011/01/11/arizona ... -funerals/

Spoiler:
It’s clearly targeted at stopping the Fred Phelps monsters from picketing the little girl’s funeral. But thanks to a doctrine that allows reasonable “time, place, and manner” restrictions, it’s also almost certainly constitutional:

Quote:
Arizona legislators quickly approved emergency legislation Tuesday to head off picketing by a Topeka, Kan., church near the funeral service for a 9-year-old girl who was killed in the Tucson shootings. Unanimous votes by the House and Senate sent the bill to Gov. Jan Brewer for her expected signature. It would take effect immediately.

. . . .

The Westboro Baptist Church said Monday it plans to picket Thursday’s funeral for Christina Taylor Green because “God sent the shooter to deal with idolatrous America.” The fundamentalist church has picketed many military funerals to draw attention to its view that the deaths are God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Betcha Phelps is gay. But I digress.

Quote:
The girl was the youngest of the six people killed during the shooting at an event held by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was among 14 people injured. Giffords was shot in the head and critically wounded.

Numerous states have passed laws restricting protests at funerals after members of the Westboro church began protesting at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Arizona legislation is modeled on an Ohio law that was upheld by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Sinema said.

The four-paragraph Arizona bill makes it a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail to picket or conduct other protest activities within 300 feet of a funeral or burial service — about the length of a football field. The prohibition applies from one hour before the event to one hour after.

The Westboro ghouls say they were going to picket 1000 feet away at an intersection anyway.

These Arizona legislators are pretty good at getting sensible legislation passed fast. Trade ya for ours!

It seemed like it was taken care of before the legislature got involved, and it was more "pure" to me. Something about citizens standing up for other citizens is empowering, while the legislature doing it is the opposite.

I know it's "For a good cause," but I worry about someone using this as precedent down the road. That's how we end up with public school children being disallowed to bow their heads and thank God for their lunch, since our rights can be revoked at certain times and places. Then that president might push it out of the work cafeteria. Yes I'm aware that last one hasn't happened yet, but look around you and see how precedent is being bent. It just seems to be that the current crop of judges are adept at using anything to erode our rights.

Once again I'm displeased they are forcing me to defend them.
