More description than that would spoil the movie for you!

My favorites are Kaylee, Mal, Simon, and Jayne, probably in that order.

See, I would put Simon near the bottom of my list, and I still think he's a great character. He just ... didn't make me laugh nearly as often as Jayne or Mal. The entire ensemble was wonderful. Zoë and Wash were probably the least interesting, and even they were great.

Wash is probably #5, followed by River.

Simon's not a makes-you-laugh character. But the raw chemistry Sean and Summer captured is probably the single most heartfelt part of the show. Every scene between them is touching, heart-warming, and heart-breaking all at the same time. I consider him the runaway, hands-down most sympathetic character in the cast.

Oh boy. If I had to rate them all in order from most to least favorite, it would probably be:

Malcolm Reynolds
Jayne Cobb
Derrial Book
Kaylee Frye
Inara Sera
Simon Tamm
River Tamm
Hoban Washburn
Zoë Washburn

Note that this doesn't mean I consider Zoë uninteresting or unimportant. She's pretty much right there with Serenity in being a big part of Mal's very soul. For me, she just is the least interesting of a very interesting bunch.

Despite my rabid obsession with Christina Hendricks, after some further thought, my favorite episode is probably the second episode with Nishka.

Spoiler:
Isn't it widely accepted that Sheppard was an Operative in his past? It seems pretty obvious that everything points to that.

It's a good guess, but spoiler that. Kirra just watched Jaynestown. Not that she's seen Serenity yet to know what you're referring to...

Wash, without a doubt. Although I love them all, Wash is by far my favorite.

And on that note, I present Leaf on the Wind by Bedlam Bards (Obvious spoiler, but awesome song):
Spoiler:

lyrics for anyone who's interested:
Spoiler:
Leaf on the Wind

I was born on a rock where the stars didn't shine,
now I soar like a leaf on the wind,
The clouds were polluted, the sea filled with brine,
now I soar like a leaf on the wind,
I swore to myself that above it I'd rise,
Sail over the mountains and into the skies,
To see the stars brighter than man can devise,
I'd soar like a leaf on the wind.

When governments quarreled, I was called to the fight,
to soar like a leaf on the wind,
I offered my wings to the side I thought right,
to soar like a leaf on the wind,
Now after two sorties, my boat ran aground,
My captors with laurels of vict'ry were crowned,
When the killing was over, my freedom I found,
to soar like a leaf on the wind.

I wandered the whole 'verse, I went where I'd please,
adrift like a leaf on the wind,
I spent a whole month trying to juggle geese,
adrift like a leaf on the wind,
But wherever I went, there was one thing I'd lack,
The stars, they were calling for me to come back,
Farewell to the land and Ni-Hao to the black!
Once more I'm a leaf on the wind.

The Renshaw Boys begged me; Tanaka he raved,
to soar like a leaf on the wind,
Serenity's crew had the one thing I craved,
as I soared like a leaf on the wind,
The moons and the planets each have their own charms,
But the heavens I sought were in Zoe's strong arms,
A warrior, a Goddess, to keep me from harm,
as I soar like a leaf on the wind.

Now sometimes I carry a gun when I roam,
though I soar like a leaf on the wind,
With puppets and dinosaurs, I'm much more at home,
as I soar like a leaf on the wind,
Laughter was always my ally in life,
And humor has always deflected my strife,
It got me through torture, it won me my wife,
and I soar like a leaf on the wind.

It ain't easy to pilot a ship that can't turn,
but I'll soar like a leaf on the wind,
Can't pull crazy Ivans, can't go for hard burn,
but I'll soar like a leaf on the wind,
Now, once you've made sure that the signal gets through,
There's one final thing that I want you to do,
Put me where I'll see stars, so that I can see you,
and I'll soar like a leaf on the wind.

Mal is it for me. It was his ship and his show.

War Stories was perhaps my fav of the entire series.

I gotta go with Shindig. I enjoyed Kaylee's fish out of water ordeal.

Ariel is probably my favorite episode. (At least in part because it's a great heist story, and I love heist stories.)
I'd be surprised if Kaffis doesn't have it in his top 3, since it's Simon's biggest character development episode, too.

"Objects in Space" is hands down the best episode in the entire series.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Out of Gas. That episode is incredible. It is clearly the best Firefly episode. The way it effectively weaves between the three timelines to tell the story.

As far as characters, I'd say my favorite is Kaylee or Mal.

Only line from Jubal Early I liked was "That's no Shepherd." It's among my least favorite...

Yeah, it was okay. I really find non-linear storytelling gimicky and unnecessary, though.

Out of Gas is one of my favorites as well. I have to say that it's amazing that the show had 14 episodes, and it's so debatable which is the best. So many are SO good!

Out of Gas is my number 1. The way it regulates the tension through the 3 layers is very artful and skilled storytelling, and the character development and surprises that pretty much all the original crew's origins offer is very interesting. But the coup d'ètat is really the final moments, which really capture the soul of Mal and his love of Serenity so eloquently that it leaves me speechless every time.

Jaynetown and Ariel compete closely for #2. So, yes, Taly, you're right. Though, honestly, Ariel is more interesting for the Mal/Jayne character study than Simon. There's one scene between River and Simon that essentially encapsulates their entire character dynamic, and is really profoundly awesome, and it's surprisingly not in Ariel, IIRC.

Ironically enough, my top 3 episodes are really the 3 that deliver 95% of Jayne's character development, even though Jayne is only at the top of the middle third of the crew in terms of my affection for the character. I think this is because they deliver a LOT of Jayne development, creating almost all of his real depth as a character, whereas the other characters' developments tend to be much more evenly spread out.

The Serenity movie really helps give closure to Jayne's character development, as well. I'd say he turns a corner in that "episode." (One could argue he turns that corner at the end of Ariel, but I think that's just him putting on the breaks in preparation for the turn.)

I would have put Jayne's turning the corner in War Stories. He makes it pretty clear where his loyalty is when he comes into the dining area and jacks a clip into Viera.

After War Stories, my two favorites are Yo-Saff-Bridge's appearances. It's not just because of Christina Hendricks, either.

Jayne's one-liners in Our Mrs. Reynolds are classic. The trap set for the bandits at the beginning of that episode was a true Mal plan, except that it actually worked.

Trash featured Inara actually participating in a heist, which is always a good time. You often overlook how devious and sneaky she can be. Mal's display of raw machismo at the end of the episode was another classic Mal moment. Only Mal would consider that a job that "went well."

And we see Nathan Fillion's bare behind (you know, opposite his "hammer"), which can only be good.
