At CES 2011, ioSafe demonstrated the durability of its Go-Anywhere Ultra Rugged Portable Hard Drive by letting reporters shoot it with a shotgun. I had a chance to take a few shots myself.

I don't think my data would be my first concern if I was taking shotgun fire, but they also put the drive in a vice and then submerged the drive in water. After they cleaned the access port, they had it working again in a short period of time. Link goes to photo gallery of the experiment.

I worry more about long term durability than this kind of stuff, honestly.

I want to be sure that if I put data on it, I'll be able to access it a year, or two, or three later.

This sounds like an excellent device to keep in an inside pocket to block bullet fire.

Gives a new meaning to the term 'data security'.

I don't know, a heavy jacket will stop birdshot. If the example was buck or slug, I'd be duly impressed.

M-16 killed it with one shot.

Still, impressive.

If data security becomes less of an issue when under shotgun fire... I think it is right out the window if I am under machine gun fire.

If you really care so much about your data, put it on two drives in two different locations that are miles apart.

An M16 fires a military grade version of the .223 Remington. The civilian round will fire completely through a door. The military round penetrates walls and bricks.
