Dell Streak 7 Tablet

Looks quite interesting.

Really comes down to how they price it, but if it's in the $200 range, there's a good chance I'll get one.

If I was interested in a tablet, which I kind of am, I'd be a lot more excited by the Android Honeycomb (3.0) offerings like the Motorola Xoom.

I've got a LG G-Slate with my name on it,whenever they finally come out, but yea, the Streak looks nice!

Unless you are hard pressed for a tablet *right now*, I'd probably suggest waiting a few months. Demand is going through the roof, and competition is going to drive prices down in the very near future. Also, there are some serious hardware upgrades on the near horizon (dual core, etc...).

Android 2.2 is a smartphone OS that was more or less wedged into a tablet. It works fine, don't get me wrong, but honeycomb (3.0) is developed with tablets in mind from the ground (framework) up. You should see 3.0 based tablets start flooding the market this spring.

Be interesting to see if the Streak actually goes to market with 2.2, or is 3.0 based by the time they finish developing it.

I'll probably end up waiting until this summer to actually get a tablet, I'm anticipating a good combination of price drops and feature increases by then.

I really doubt Dell will be skipping 2.3 completely and going straight to Honeycomb. Especially this late in the game without so much as a hint toward it. I'm 99% confident the Streak 7 will be launching with 2.2.

The Playbook looks good- I was surprised to see the Dell Duo made the top 8 list as well- it looked a bit gimicky, but I might take another look at it... Bridging the difference between a tablet and a netbook could be quite nice.

I doubt any of the current crop of tablets could run honeycomb well. It's been stated by some of the hardware people that you need something like the tegra 2 at a minimum to run it.

Word I've heard is everyone is coming out with a Pad and most of them are crap. NephyrS has already stated my current plan.

I didn't read any of the context around that comment, but to presume that it will run on 'anything' is silly.

It won't. It just takes too much hardware to do these things...
The base UI framework is designed around a 3D/Holographic style that is seriously processor intensive.

It's the hardware vendors who have to put together packages to support their products, and the framework is optimized around the Tegra 2 as that is considered the baseline for 3.0 hardware deployment.

That isn't to say that no one will put together a stripped down package that will run on a 600Mhz/800Mhz/1Ghz single core processor. Just don't expect it do much in terms of features.

I'm quite comfortable saying that most of the hardware in mainstream distribution right now will never see honeycomb (outside of the mod community, where interesting things are possible).

In fact, I would bet you a nice lunch that even the early Tegra 2 devices (like the LG Optimus 2x) may not ever see an official honeycomb release.
