Getting excited, having Lasik done this Friday. After 30 years of glasses I hope I can be rid of them.

Lucky, I just got glasses on Thursday... I want Lasik but my eyes keep getting worse and until they plateau I am prolly not a good candidate.

I still can't get over how awesome that surgery is for some people.

I've wanted it, but was warned that there is a higher-than not chance that you will be using eye drops for the rest of your life, because the laser burns out your tear glands.

Why anyone would want a laser in their eye is beyond my understanding. Glasses are totally awesome.

No...no, they're not.

I'd love to be glass-less, but I'm terrified of something going wrong. So with contacts I remain.

I only wear my glasses driving and at the movie theater, so I have never really considered the surgery worthwhile.

I don't think I could wear contacts. Putting things in my eyes is a non-starter. Just saying the word "eyes" makes my eyes water.

argh this thread is making my eyes hurt.

I have done a lot of research on it and I have never heard that. Yes it can affect tear production and especially for a while after the surgery I will need to use drops but that is mainly due to the inflammation from the surgery. Over time that should go away. I am not saying it can't happen but I think the severe dry eye risk is minimal. I think it affects people more that already have the condition before surgery.

I could have had the surgery years ago but I was waiting for improvements especially for the flap they create when they do the surgery. They used to use a blade to make the flap (micro-ketone some places still use it) but now they use a different laser to make the flap. The cleaner cut heals better.

I am so sick of glasses and I can't wear contacts anymore they hurt my eyes too much. The whole thing should take less than 5 minutes to complete and hopefully I will be able to get rid of them for a while.

I had LASIK done over five years ago. I had horrible eyesight, I has my lenses thinned they were so thick. Anything five inches past my face was a blur. After five years one eye is 20/20 and the other is 20/15. I had some slight haloing and dry eyes for about ten months or so after the surgery, then it cleared up. No regrets here whatsoever.

I am not a candidate for this.

I had LASIK performed about 6 years ago. And while you will go through a period where your eyes are dryer than normal, this will eventually pass. For me, this lasted about 6 months. I haven't seen an optometrist since my last post surgery follow-up.

As to the laser damaging tear glands, it's not even possible. After the cut to create the flap, all laser treatment is done to the inside of the cornea.

As everyone else has said, good luck with the surgery and let us know how it goes!

I've considered it but it makes me to nervous. First of all I'd have to take some time off of work. I'm not sure of the exact regulations but I would assume I would have to get my medical certification redone after the surgery. And I know its probably a 99% success rate...but what happens if something went wrong?? There goes my whole career! Gahhh!

My ex-husband loved it. (My company used to pay 100%, obviously before we divorced.) He had a pretty severe astigmatism, and was fairly blind without glasses before it.

Some haloing and dry eyes afterwards, and he'll probably need reading glasses some day, but it's a total improvement over glasses or contacts every day.

Procedure is done, and I can already see. Things are a bit hazy but I can atually read stuff more than 2 feet away, this is awesome.

Too nearsighted. They would have to remove more cornea than there is to make it work.

Had my first follow up today and I am now 20/20 one day after the surgery. Still a light haze, especially after using some of the drops but that will go away eventually. Worst thing was yesterday when I got home. They tell you to take a 4 hour nap afterwards. I tried but my one eye started burning really bad, it felt like when you are cutting an onion (except it felt like the onion was in my eye) and was watering so bad it looked liked I was crying. Thankfully it cleared up within an hour or so.

Other than that no real pain or issues, they feel normal today. It will be interesting to see where I finally stabilize at I could almost make out the 15 line so I may even end up at 20/15 after they heal.

Something like 8 years after my PRK surgery and I'm still 20/15. I have the chronic dry eyes thing, but having to use eye drops in the winter isn't nearly as bad as having to wear glasses.
