Oh no, there were plenty of 2hb items we could use. We just adopted the AOS because it was the best 2hb for skillups and because we, as rangers, have a soft spot in our hearts for all things abandoned.

In the old world, I believe that was true. We were very limited in items we could use at such a low level that were 2hb. The shovel was a good weapon to train with as for a two handed weapon it was semi fast.

IIRC, it was the only 2HB a Ranger could use prior to level 40 or so. Even then, there was only one or two 2HB available to Rangers. With the release of Kunark and subsequent expansions, the Ranger usable 2HB pool got considerably larger. The Abandoned Orc Shovel became a symbol of old school Rangers. I only wish there had been a 'bonk' sound effect when using it.
