No one is that busy at any company for any prolonged period of time. In fact didn't you yourself just got a new little side project that isn't in your usual job description?

My project has ended up primarily calling people and sending emails. And yes, they keep us busy enough that it's difficult for even the top performers to keep up with our standard daily workload. Others fall far behind...

There are occasional lulls. They are not reliable enough that one could take on extra work ith a deadline. (Amusingly, during the biggest/longest lull of the year, from about December 20th through January 2nd, there's a freeze on making any changes to the systems/network...)

All you did is prove that that company was a company that never got their *** out of the mid 90's. They have poor or no resource management or they view all IT as cost. An antiquated view that costs them good IT workers. Look at it this way -if they had their resources managed correctly they would have saved: a good employee, however long it took to have this conversation, and five thousand dollars. They done **** up.

Ara you need someone to start a project to create the support infrastructure and processes you guys obviously desperately need at your company? I bet you don't even have any way to track the wasted money your company is hemorrhaging. Do you have a CIO, is the CIO really a SVP under some other member of the board? Does your company view support only as a cost?

Interesting you say this. The recession NAILED our industry, and put several similar companies out of business. We added employees and increased profits, except for the first quarter of 2008, where we tanked. We almost made our annual plan by the end of the year, though (still very profitable).

So... yeah - tell me again how we're being out competed?

You have a systematic failure in your company - its likely your competition does not. You may have other advantages comparatively with your competitors but that does not negate your systematic failure.
