Once again, with enough funding/motivation those seem like problems that could be solved in a relatively short amount of time.

Electric cars suck. Hydrogen Fuel Cell is the way forward.

Unfortunately, hydrogen fuel cells aren't really any better than batteries. Even if all the associated cost problems are somehow solved, even liquid hydrogen has only a fourth of the energy density of gasoline, more energy must be input to boil it to a gas, and then the fuel cell itself only has about 50% efficiency. It's not any better than the batteries. These problems are fundamental physical barriers, while no one can predict the future it's unlikely these problems will ever be solved.

The most likely "solution" to the first world's oil problem has monstrous consequences, we could switch over to biodiesel or bioethanol. While corn ethanol sucks, there are other plants with many times the yield, and several promising technologies that could work. However if the first world switches enough crop production over to biofuels you're going to get global famine on a truly epic scale as the amount of land you'd have to switch over from food to fuel production pretty much precludes feeding 7 billion people. The deaths would probably be in the hundreds of millions if not higher.

Algae farming has always seemed like a decent idea to me.

Problem with the biofuels is that it affects the food markets since it raises demand for some crops.

Algae farming doesn't affect food crops, because you don't need arable land to grow it on. You can grow it anywhere. The main insurmountable problem with algae farming is you can't beat natural selection. Oil-producing algae pours a significant amount of its resources into producing those hydrocarbons. If you set this up on a large scale, it's inevitable that eventually a mutation that removes the oil-producing capacity will occur, and this new mutant will quickly outcompete and kill all your oilgae because it's using all its collected energy on growth and reproduction, not wasting it making oil.

Why are you so against alternate fuel sources, Xequecal?

So rather than natural select, we simply do human selection or even genetic selection. Ya know like we do with all of our other plants we grow?

Except that fuel cells have much higher energy densities and lifetimes compared to batteries.

I'd not buy a used car that runs off a battery.

Why are you so anti-technology? We've taken on far greater challenges than preventing mutant algae from spreading.

Mubarak's out and Swiss bank has frozen his assets for 3 years. Military has taken command until something is figured out.

He was stupid for keeping his assets in a Swiss bank account. Even converting them to gold and hiding it on an island would've been a better idea.

I'm cautiously optimistic. This was a military coup.

The people need to be very vigilant over the next few months, and remain focused on the end game. This is both the best and worst thing that could have happened, depending on the intentions of the military.

The military won't do anything wrong, since all the members of it are Egyptian and have access to the Internet so they all know 100% what's going on.

That's my prediction, you can agree or not. I just can't see the military doing anything bad here.

With the Internet you can see both sides of any story, and if you're a soldier you might realize it's not a good idea to support a new dictator or shoot at civilians of your own country.

Which is why dictatorships don't exist.

Oh... wait...

Have any dictatorships ever come to power in a nation that already had a large/active internet user base?

I'm not sure, but dictatorships exist in pretty much all nations to some degree, and the internet developed within them.
