Q:What do "short wait," "long wait" and "very long wait" mean?

A:Sometimes movies in your Queue may display a wait status in the Expected Availability column. A short, long or very long wait means that more customers want to see this movie than we have copies for.
We recommend that you list your movies in the order you want to view them, regardless of their availability, so that we can ship them in order once they become available. You will receive the movie eventually. The Expected Availability categories are definted as follows:

Now: This means we don't expect delays. However, because of the variability in demand, we cannot guarantee we'll have enough copies.

Short Wait: This means we don't have quite enough copies; the wait is usually less than 7 days.

Long Wait: This means there's serious demand for the title; the wait is generally less than 14 days.

Very Long Wait: This means there's extremely high demand, limited availability and/or a very long wait for this title. Usually the wait is less than 30 days, but it could be longer -- for example, if the movie is out of print or we're otherwise unable to secure additional copies.

Am I misreading that or are they saying that if they no longer carry a movie it can still be added to your queue even if they can't get another copy? I ask because Black Lagoon disc 3 has been at the top of my queue since November 15th with a Very Long Wait.

Try removing everything else from you queue. Having any disc in your queue other than the one you want seems pointless.

I think what it means is that the discs of it they have are all loaned out... And since it's not available for purchase, they can't buy another one and send it to you, so you have to wait until someone returns it.

So what if the person who has it on loan decides to keep it for a year? Or what if they lost it or broke it? That would suck.
Maybe they only have one copy and a long list of people before you who want to watch it.

I have 134 other things in my queue... I'd hate to rebuild that list to try and force the issue.

Black Lagoon is a great show. However, since Geneon went out of business, the original DVDs are now out of print. FUNimation picked up the show, but it doesn't look like they've done much with it. At least, when I checked Right Stuf and Amazon, both stores said they didn't have any copies.

However, I am able to add Black Lagoon disc 3 to my Netflix queue. When I tried another out of print show, Rozen Maiden, Netflix gave me the green "Save" button instead of the red "Add All" button. I would speculate that Netflix has a couple of copies of the disc, not that they don't have it at all.

Well that's comforting at least.

Unrelated question: Do you know if anyone ever took over Tenshi ni Narumon? When Broccoli (via Synch-Point) had the rights I got volume 1 and 2 but then the company just sort of imploded.

I haven't heard anything about someone rescuing this show.

The problem with Tenshi ni Narumon is that even before Synch Point went out of business, they were already unhappy with the sales of that show. So it's unlikely for another company to pick up the license when it wasn't doing well in the first place.

FUNimation license rescued FLCL from Synch Point, but FLCL was a lot more popular.

No, what that means is that they have a finite number of copies, that for whatever reason can't be replaced or expanded. So if it becomes very popular, then you're going to have to wait, and they can't purchase or aquire more copies to help increase their supply.

Are we sure it doesn't mean they have Disc 1 and 2 and someone broke Disc 3? Because honestly it's going on 90 days now for a single disc that has been at the top of the queue for that entire time.

What if, nationwide, they only have the one disc and it's on the top of the queue for like 12 people? It could take awhile.

It could mean that, yes, but one would think that, a) they don't have just one copy of a given item; at least not on purpose. It's simply not efficient, even for unpopular stuff; and b) they would remove it from the list if the last one actually broke or was deemed stolen/missing.

I use the Blockbuster equivalent to Netflix, but both "The Lost Boys" and "Ghostbusters" were in the "very long wait" category. They were 1 and 2 in my queue for 4-5 months before they finally arrived. I suspect there were only one or two copies of each in the system.
